When did you know you were hooked?

The night I knew I was hooked, I was in my bicycle shop. I had closed my shop at 6pm but here it was 10pm. All the lights were off except the one over the front counter, with the front door locked. There were four of us standing at the counter, all with side arms. (it's Arizona) On the counter sat a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle and $20,000 in cash. All I kept thinking was that if any police officer friend drove by, this could only be a drug deal. Who in their right mind would pay $20,000 for a piece of cardboard? The end result was I sold my card and everyone went home happy.

thanks,
Merrill

Thanks Chris and Jake, but it's only a Merkle. There is a Cobb bat-off (my favorite T206) with a Brown Lenox back in the Goodwin Auction. Now THAT is a great card.
And I will never own it.:(

Well, for me, I was hooked the first time I saw a pre-war card on ebay. I was wanting to collect something, and I used to drive a bus route that went right past a sports card store. It reminded me of when I collected Topps as a kid in the late 70's, so I figured one day I'd go in there and start collecting baseball cards again.

I went in there one day and the guy had everything packed up in boxes and said he was closing down. He sold me two boxes full of modern cards (mostly '98-2004?), I think around 6 or 7 thousand mix matched cards for around $80.00. I bought binders & page sheets and in no particular order I just filled the slots. There were so many different kinds it became mind boggling :o. After I was done doing that, I started going on ebay and buying mix matched "lots" of modern stuff........until one day I found these "pre-war" cards. It was love at first sight. I was stung :D

I bought a T206 Hallman SGC 50 first, and bought other types after that- but although the other cards were nice, I was mostly attracted to the T206's. I began to try to learn about the set, and found Trae's site T206.org. He suggested I check out Net54 and said there's the best group of hobby guys on Net54,,,,,and he was right :)

I've learned so much here, and made some great friends- and still love T206's :D

Sincerely, Clayton

My first National in maybe 1976 or 77. I had one T205 and one T206 at the time and suddenly there were tables full of them. And I NEEDED them ALL!!

It all flowed from my initial obsession with 1987 Topps. I have been hooked ever since.

"When the smack begins to flow
I really don't care anymore
About all the Jim-Jim's in this town
And all the politicians makin' crazy sounds
And everybody puttin' everybody else down
And all the dead bodies piled up in mounds"

Oh, you're talking about baseball cards. Sorry. It was when I bought my first pre-war card, a T206 on a whim, a Walter Johnson portrait. About 12 years ago.

I was hooked once I found this site and other collectors to learn from. Before that it was just a hobby to pass the time.

Thank God I found other people out there that know what I'm going through. I'm not the only one. :D:D:D:D:D

I was hooked about 13-14 yrs ago when I saw the ebay offerings of pre-war cards. I saw how collecting them would be fun and widespread, with so many available. (and also after I bought my first nice card, a T205 Johnson in a PSA 7 holder......from my now, auction partner)
