Ambitious custom project: 1961-63 Post

Because of what I perceive to be limited interest
by this august audience in the realm of custom
cards, I've pretty much ceased presenting my
new issues in this forum.

Those who have an interest can find each new
project on my blog as it is completed.

I'm making an exception this time, however,
because I'm excited about my latest project.
I'm making custom versions, one per year 1961,
1962 and 1963, of six-card Post cereal box
backs.

I've just completed the 1961 box back and will
be posting it on my blog on Friday 4/24.

But I wanted to share it here first.

Ken . . . short answer is yes, the Post card sheet and singles are available. Ordering information will be on my blog entry tomorrow. The full box-back is $14.50, single cards are $9.95-12.50.

Sorry, Bob, I don't do commissioned work. My own list of projects that I want to tackle will surely outlive me.

Making custom cards is my principal hobby these days. I enjoy the research and creation process much more than the actual printing, cutting, etc., and am not keen on expanding on the "commercial" side of the process.

I'm always interested, though, in hearing suggestions from collectors.

my commission is more in line w/ the pearl jam 1972ish cards, but with a different band! (although I do dig pearl jam)

Fine work, Bob. I admire your passion and am so glad you've branched out into such an interesting project with the Post Cereal panel /cards. When you do the '62, I hope you include a different version of the M 'n M boys, since Mick and Roger had virtually the same photos in '61 and '62.:D

I'm two cards into the 1963 sheet now: Snider as a Met and Jim Umbricht.

I'm saving the 1962, my favorite year of Post, for last, but don't have Mantle or Maris on the list.

If I had a good high-res scan of a Post 10s tray bottom, It might be fun to remake the M&M cards and add one more.

While I'm disappointed at no Roger or Mickey, you always manage to select interesting subjects.

While I'm talking to you, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for the fantasy 1952 Red Man Tobacco card you rendered of Mr. Mantle. You've indeed captured the aura and character of those wonderful cards. It took me a while to unwrap your makeshift wrapper that was attached to the quality thick and stiff corrugated cardboard. My heart was in my throat, bro! A large Card-Saver would have reduced some of my raised blood pressure.

Once freed, he was gently placed inside a Mylar Snug, then mounted inside a nice Capital Plastics Co. quarter-inch thick four-screw lucite holder. I will proudly place it with my Stahl-Meyer, Post Cereal, Salada Coins, et al. Sometimes a fantasy gem fits in with the genuine. Thanks again, Bob. --Brian Powell

I greatly admire Bob's work. I keep one of them with my 58 set. It involves a player whose name appears in an early checklist in the set but whose card was pulled ( or more likely never produced) and does not exist... but for Bob's creation of it :)

UPDATE: Recently got Bob's 1961 Post Cereal Koufax
 

Recently, a small package arrived in the mail containing Bob Lemke's fantasy card of his 1961 Post Cereal Sandy Koufax. Exceptionally nice and most satisfying. I am genuinely thrilled.

The size is spot-on. The single card was cut in such a way that the black line circumventing a 1961 Post is completely intact, with a tiny portion of white surrounding the black. This constitutes a perfect cut for a serious Post Cereal collector. Bob makes his cards with a matte surface, which fits in just fine with the semi-gloss genuine Post.

The pose of Sandy was superb, and his smile radiates. It would trace from before 1961, and I find that pleasing as well. The coloring on the card somehow captures the same as a genuine Post, which is very impressive. Bob Lemke really researched hard to find the elusive fonts, and there were several that had to be found, and he has done it! Bravo. Bravo.

All in all, Bob has truly captured the essence and aura of the 1961 Post Cereal. With it being a fantasy from 1961, that year was significant and the pivotal breakout year for Sandy Koufax. Good choice on Bob's part.

Bob Lemke did not ask me to write this. My superlatives for "my latest card" are sincere and from the heart. As a postwar regional / food connoisseur, I love this card and will display it with pride along with my genuine, original period pieces.:D
