Goodwin...what is going on?

After having the auction preview pushed to today, Friday, August 18th, I just saw this message on their website: Masterpieces and Uncommon Commons LXXII will preview Monday, August 21, 2017 and open for bidding Tuesday, August 22, 2017. The auction closes on Thursday, September 7, 2017.

Anyone know what is going on?

packs 08-18-2017 10:37 AM

They're adjusting for the eclipse.

RedsFan1941 08-18-2017 11:08 AM

it seems like the the last year or so, a few of the smaller boutique auction houses are unclear about when their next auction is, or a previously announced date gets pushed back. lack of consignments maybe?

pawpawdiv9 08-18-2017 11:48 AM

They're still sorting thru all my 1988 Donruss cards

chiprop 08-18-2017 01:59 PM

Just spoke to Bill. Auction preview will be available for viewing next week.

Peter_Spaeth 08-18-2017 02:03 PM

Maybe he has another Koufax PSA 8 and is debating whether to still call it a $200K card.

"For the discerning collector or the profit-driven investor, this card should be an automatic. The Koufax rookie card’s climb has been as remarkable as Koufax pitching at Dodger Stadium on a hot summer day. We expect the day to come very soon, when Koufax rookies at PSA 8 will be selling well in excess of $200,000 and perhaps as $250,000. If you’ve ever contemplated a Clemente rookie, we strongly encourage you investigate this card."

BeanTown 08-18-2017 02:07 PM

Maybe they took in some late additions which were very nice, and they are making last minute changes.

rdixon1208 08-18-2017 02:28 PM

I think the last Goodwin auction was pushed back several times too. Weird

Peter, this wasn't edited? This was a direct quote? This literally can't be accurate. There is no fiber in my being that recognizes this as a rational statement. I'm not laughing out loud, but I'm laughing internally at the absurdity of this quote. :D

I feel a little frustrated at comments like this. The world is all in favor of the rich guy. Since I can't afford these high dollar cards, I don't read these fabulous portfolio suggestions. The little guy never gets a chance. :D

They've moved the auction back again. Now it will begin on Wednesday, August 23. This is the third different date that they've given.

I would be pretty peeved if I had consignments with them. Hopefully, cosigners are getting a different message than what is on the website.

Maybe the should have rephrased that?

packs 08-21-2017 10:07 AM

Have Koufax's really gotten that inflated? I have a PSA 6 I paid $250 for over a decade ago. Am I sitting on money?

Update: it appears that I am.

Aquarian Sports Cards 08-21-2017 10:39 AM

If you put it in the $500 thread it would double your money pretty quickly.

pkaufman 08-22-2017 04:56 PM

I guess Bill Goodwin doesn't believe in previews because there is still nothing up and the auction supposedly starts tomorrow ????

glchen 08-22-2017 04:58 PM

The home page lists the auction highlights. Some nice cards!

Aren't those from the last auction?

Peter_Spaeth 08-22-2017 05:22 PM

I don't understand the obsession with when Goodwin starts his auction.

nolemmings 08-22-2017 05:46 PM

It's not an obsession, but it is more than mildly irritating when, for the second straight auction at least, Goodwin has given start dates, waited fairly close to their beginning, and then bumped them back multiple times for no good stated reason. Makes the auction look amateurish--they really should get their poop in a group.

So wait, what's the biggie?

nolemmings 08-22-2017 05:52 PM

So why the hell give a starting date? Let it happens when it happens.

Were you planning your social life around opening night? :D

nolemmings 08-22-2017 05:55 PM

Actually, I'm hoping to not be in jail. About to go downtown Phoenix. Like. Now.

Are you sure? They are now pulled from his site. The only thing on there now is his last auction.

chiprop 08-23-2017 04:51 AM

Goodwin always has a dozen cards worthy of any collection. The highlights for his next auction are on the home page. Sick!

Well Mister Smarty-Pants, it just so happens that my lady friend and I first met on 8/16, and I was going to pop the question to her on that day in code by making sure the lot number corresponding to the date I've reserved the wedding chapel for received the very first bid.

She's very perceptive.

Now I've cancelled the reservation. I guess it just wasn't meant to be.

I rarely bid in his auctions anymore..I don't care for the management of the parent company either..
I prefer to support our advertisers and there is plenty to keep me busy.

calvindog 08-23-2017 07:42 AM

Based on the number of calls I get about Ken Goldin I would say Goodwin is the safer bet.

+1

The last time I won a lot from them, 1 of the better cards was not included in the shipment. I notified them immediately of such. A few days later they said it would be sent out right away and nothing ever showed up. After several weeks of waiting, we agreed on a partial refund. Multiple times I was told the check would be sent but it never was. It took almost 2 months after the auction ended and I made payment for everything to be settled.

If my wife (also very perceptive) sees your post, she will learn of my mistresses and my life will be ruined.

To Goodwin - "stall"

To Darwin - "please delete"

Glenn, 8/16 is indeed a special date. My twin sons were born on 8/16/71. And, I got remarried on 8/16/97. On our 20th anniversary last week, #2 wifey and I went to the Wash. Nationals game - she's a keeper!

calvindog 08-23-2017 07:56 AM

My twin sons were also born on 8-16!

packs 08-23-2017 08:18 AM

Auction still isn't open I guess.

prestigecollectibles 08-23-2017 09:03 AM

Back in October 2005 I called Bill because I was looking to buy a 1952 Topps PSA 3 Mantle for a customer. Bill said he had one that he could sell for $7500. When I received the card and credit card slips he charged me $8500. I called him and he said oh no, I said $8500, but agreed to refund me $500. Since I did the transaction by phone I had no proof. Never bought anything from him again.

Republicaninmass 08-23-2017 10:43 AM

my guess, it opens sometime before the closing date

ditto here...I consigned to Goodwin maybe 5 years ago and I had to hound Bill just to get paid. No thanks. There are way too many other AH's who pay in a timely to deal with such BS!

If you look at the front page (desktop), you see the auction highlights for Proctor's Theater Ruth, Felix Mendelsohn Ruth and Cobb, W600 Wagner, Boston Garter Cobb, etc. These are all new items and not in the previous auction.

Shoeless Moe 08-23-2017 01:06 PM

The reason for the delay is obvious.

Goldin is announcing they are auctioning Goodwin's next entire auction.

I hope people realize a lot higher prices with Goldin than me! I attained substantially higher prices with Bill Goodwin and REA, but lost my butt with Goldin (twice)...
