New pickups to start the new year

Posted By: Richard
Well, even though the Rams' season was over pretty much at the beginning of the season, I still continue to buy Rams items. I usually do more buying during the off season than any other time. Here is the first item I got for the new year. It's also the oldest Rams item I have (so far).

It's a home game program, in Cleveland, against the Green Bay Packers, dated Oct. 17, 1937. Of course 1937 was the first year for the Rams, and what a year it was, going 1-10 (kind of reminds me of 2007!) and losing ALL of their home games (including this 35-10 pummeling to the Packers).

Posted By: Michael Moran
My first pick up is a football charm given to members of the 1928 Pottsville Maroons - it was made from anthracite coal. I added the image to the Wikipedia article on the Maroons.
<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pottsville_Maroons</a" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pottsville_Maroons</a>

Posted By: Michael Moran
Although I'm not sure what happened to it - it may be packed away somewhere - I remember that my father had one of these - and I have copies of letters from other 1928 Maroons players to the reunion committee asking about the charms - and the seller has been the source of all the programs and other Maroon items I have. He also had a family relationship with the team.

Posted By: davidcycleback
In the olden days, they used award charms like this on many sports (which doesn't mean they're common in today's market, as they aren't). In the estate of Pre-WWI Boston Red Sox pitching star Smokey Joe Wood were a number of circa 1920s Yale charms from when he was their baseball coach. Smokey's charms were very similar to the above pictured, except they were gold and shaped as baseballs.

Posted By: Richard
Ahhh, I love the Bell Brands! Unfortunately, it also brings back bad memories. Not very long ago I sold my #1 graded 1959 set to MOSH. I will probably be kicking myself for years to come.

Here is something else I just won on ebay.

The 1958-60 yearbooks are my favorites, they have great illustrated covers. I'm still missing the '58 however.

Posted By: John S
Richard,

Here is the '58. I purchased it for the Dan Reeves pictorial (for my HOF collection). If you ever come across a wire or press photo issued while Reeves was alive I would be more than happy to trade.

New pickups to start the new year

Posted By: Richard
This isn't a NEW pickup, as I've had it for more than 30 years. I'm just proud that I had the sense to hold on to it for so long, especially not really knowing who he was for many years. I found it tucked inside an old college program I bought at a used book store, mid 70's maybe.

I just thought some would like it since Benny Friedman is mentioned in quite a few threads.

Posted By: Michael Moran
On the subject of Benny Friedman - his 1977 Touchdown Card used the wrong side of this photo - Benny is on the right and Cliff Montgomery is on the left - both in Brooklyn Dodgers uniforms.
