I didn't notice a thread on Jim Thorpe alone, and rather than get off track on the 100 Best Books thread I thought I'd start one - and offer this to get it going - a program from Thorpe's football tenure with the Portsmouth Shoe-Steel team. I haven't seen another example, and would love to see a Portsmouth home program with a team photo. I also found an article about the game online

I'll post one more for now - fast forward 25 years from that football game and Jim Thorpe is signing autographs at The New England Sportsman's and Boat Show - and on the reverse of the page is Ted Williams, which makes the 1959 Fleer card the perfect companion.

Mike, great idea for a thread! Love the Shoe-Steel program - what a great piece of history.

I looked up this game in Home & Away - it was a big deal for Portsmouth to play in the “big city”. Becker documented that Creasy was looking for a tougher game (apparently they had played a soft schedule to date). The Guards offered 37% of the gate and the Steels took it and started “loading up” (common practice of signing ringers for big games). One of the players signed was Russell Hathway who had played for the Maroons and Bisons in the NFL. The Norfolk and Western ran an excursion train to Cincinnati. There is no exact attendance figure, but one newspaper estimated at 5-7 thousand which may have been a Redland stadium record. (As your article shows, the Cincinatti newspapers definitely played up Thorpe's appearance - Becker mentioned "fathers last chance to take their sons see the great Jim Thorpe.") Portsmouth lost the game 19-12, but this was one of the games Thorpe was healthy for as we know he threw a touchdown pass. No other game stats were provided in the book.

I was finally able to get my hands on a copy of this rare French magazine from 1912. I've had this on my list for many years because it has an awesome supplement of Jim Thorpe. I was able to hunt one down through some deep internet research and it arrived yesterday! It's about 11 x 14 and the artwork & colors are beautiful.

FYI...shipping time from central France to central Oklahoma is almost 3 weeks! :D

Hi...I’ve been a member for awhile but never posted anything. The Thorpe thread has been calling to me for awhile and love the pieces that have been shown so far. I have an immense Jim Thorpe collection of over 1000 pieces that has never been seen (other than many of the pieces themselves) but never been shared as a collection. My earliest piece is 1904 when he enrolled in Carlisle. If somebody will teach me how to load photos I’d be willing to start sharing photos of my collection....if anybody is interested in seeing what I have. I see some fellow Oklahoma collectors who enjoy having Thorpe pieces! Hopefully, I’ve posted this correctly and not messed up the flow of the thread. Thanks! Mike

Mike, Do you have any Thorpe items related to him playing pro football? I'm especially interested in his pre-NFL seasons with the Canton Bulldogs particularly 1915-17, 1919. Thanks.

John...I have not had the privilege to purchase any Canton items with Thorpe. I have Carlisle, Cleveland and Oorang Thorpe memorabilia. I started concentrating on his track and Olympic career as the bidding for those items are not quite as heavy most the time. Of course as you know...any Thorpe memorabilia is hard to come by. Carl has helped me to install Tapatalk and will start taking pictures of some items I have and share them. I did end up with the 1907 and 1908 postcards that have appeared on the ode to prewar thread.

Thanks Mike - those pre-NFL years (15-19) are tough to find much of anything - Thorpe was the biggest name, probably Rockne 2nd as he moonlighted in pro football, but I've never seen many items.

Here is my favorite piece and most likely earliest know Jim Thorpe item. I consider it the cornerstone of my collection. When he enrolled in Carlisle he received government issued items..this is his writing tablet. I’ve seen his wool blanket many years ago and missed it by less that 30 seconds. The owner had taken it down and said a biographer of Thorpe’s had bought it over the phone and was on his way from North Carolina to get it. I got it from a guy who’s grandfather ran a trading post turned into pawn shop and he was the heir to all the stuff left in warehouses. He had Jesse James, Cole Younger and Wyatt Earp estate items that those families had pawned. I have a copy of the pawn ticket(somewhere) and Roger Neufeldt (whom a lot of you probably know) from here in Oklahoma verified it’s authenticity as he has one and knows Thorpe family members. The 2nd photo is of Thorpe’s enrollment information off of Carlisle’s archive. Notice 878 that was assigned to him in 1904 then crossed through and then after he left and came back he was given a new number.

This item is a program for a dual track meet and baseball game on same day with Syracuse. Coach Warner wanted to be able to utilize his 2-sport athletes so came up with the idea. There is a lot mentioned about the dual meet with Syracuse in 1908 but so far I have not found any mention of him competing in 1907 against Syracuse. I’m thinking this might be his very first track meet he competed in. He is listed in 4 events but did not place in any of them which further makes me think this represents his very first competition. The student ticket would have been used to get into both events. If anybody ever sees an article about this 1907 track meet I’d sure love to see it!

This almanac is to commemorate/document the 1912 Olympics and is full of pictures of our olympians. It is in beat up condition but for me at least has been very hard to find with Thorpe on the cover. If anybody ever comes across one in much better condition and is not interested in it themselves I’d appreciate a pm about it.

This is a postcard advertising the Carlisle vs Villanova game in 1907. Very little can be found about Thorpe’s contribution in 1907. First 3 games were shutouts so he probably didn’t play unless he received the opening or halftime kickoff which perhaps could have happened. My speculation is since he ran 2 kickoff returns for touchdowns against 30-40 players in practice when he tried out for the team that he very well could have been used as a kickoff returner on a highly talented team that included Albert Exendine, Albert Payne, Pete Hauser and Frank Mount Pleasant. Thorpe was listed in lineup for 5th game against Syracuse and played against Penn to replace an injured Payne. It was reported that on his first carry he went opposite way of his blockers and got buried but went 45 yards on his next carry. He definitely ran a kickoff back for a TD against Bucknell in the 6th game of season. Unfortunately for him he didn’t score it though! He let up a few yards from the end zone, got tripped up and fumbled into the end zone where a teammate recovered it for the TD! Most of you have probably seen this one but this one is mine and Thorpe was definitely there!

I am from The Enid area right now...I have a lot of 1912 Olympic items I’ll be posting pictures of also. Looks like we collect a lot of the same things.

This postcard is from the 1908 season...not sure if Thorpe is on the field but a good chance with 18 players shown that he is. With the correct equipment a person might be able to tell or not. Minnesota was one of 2 teams to beat Carlisle in 1908. Thorpe was selected 3rd team All-American in 1908. Most of you have seen this card in the past or one like it I know..it now resides in my collection. I’m going to show some modern cards I’ve picked up over the years along with some of my vintage items so that when I run out of vintage items maybe I won’t bore others with new items.

This next item is a program from Carlisle. The program covers the ‘Athletic Celebration And Presentation of Cs for 1908’ held on March 20, 1909. Thorpe is listed as Captain of the track team. I believe it to be a rare program and quickly becoming one of my favorite pieces for sure. Jim is pictured with the baseball team which you rarely see so this program is really special!

I’m in Edmond, so not too terribly far away. I’d love to meet up if it ever makes sense. Not too many vintage collectors (or stuff to find) in this part of the world.

In 1912 Warner really got serious with Thorpe track wise to get him prepared for the Olympic trials starting with the Indooor season. This following program is from the 23rd Annual Indoor Games at Mechanics Hall in Boston on February 10, 1912. Many of the eventual track olympians can be found in the program. Thorpe competed in the 40 dash, 45 hurdles, high jump, 16lb shot, and 3 standing jumps events. Being a track guy I think this is a really nice program!

Great stuff everyone. Did you see the Olympics postcard on the LOTG auction? Very strong price, I thought. I was hoping to upgrade mine but the bidding got out of my league there at the end.

I am have long been a Thorpe fan, since I live about 45 minutes from the town that bears his name. I have a PSA 4 of the Thorpe Olympic postcard. I know the one at LOTG was the highest graded, but $6,000 just seems crazy to me when the 4s and 5s of that postcard go for around $1,000 and a "3" closed on eBay for a little over $600 recently. There have been a bunch of the Thorpe Olympic postcards coming out of the woodwork in recent years. I wish the Olympics Heroes postcard from Carlisle of him putting the shot was more common. I suspect that is climbing out of my price range when it does show up.

Yeah...that recent one went crazy! I finally picked up the Olympic Heroes one of him putting the shot recently...it is indeed a tough one to purchase. Hardly ever see it for sale. I posted the other postcard with Thorpe/Tewanima/Warner so have both now. Makes me think about getting my Thorpe postcard like the one that went 6 grand graded...it’s in pretty good shape..I’d sure take that price if mine was graded an 8(which I’m sure it wouldn’t)

I’m an Oklahoman as well. The Thorpe signed 33 Goudey Sportkings that I posted in this thread currently resides with me in Ardmore. I also have a signed leather footprint that Thorpe signed and wrote his mailing address on from when he was fitted for some custom moccasins.

Sounds like it’s time for an Oklahoma Thorpe Fans get together! :D

I agree. His hometown of Prague is about an hour drive for me. I think that would be an appropriate place to meet up! If anyone else is interested post here and we’ll set it up. I’ll buy dinner for anyone willing to attend.

On May 18, 1912 Thorpe participated in the Olympic Trials at Celtic Park in NY and secured his spot in the Pentathlon by winning convincingly. On May 24 & 25 he was supposed to compete in the Decathlon trials but when he and just 1 other competitor showed up the event was cancelled and he was later on added to the team based on his performance in the pentathlon trials and reputation as an all around track athlete. In his book ‘Jim Thorpe-A Biography’ William A. Cook writes that Thorpe’s final event prior to the Olympics came on June 8 at the Eastern Olympic Tryouts in Cambridge. In addition to a newspaper article I possess(can’t find it!) in which it states that Thorpe was leaving NY to travel to the Olympic Trials in Cambridge for the selection of the Olympic team that day confirms that Thorpe was in attendance at Cambridge on June 8th. The committee took the winners that day at the Eastern Trials as automatic qualifiers and then filled in the events with other athletes. That is how Thorpe made it in the high jump and long jump and Pentathlon without competing in them at the Trials. The selection was done on June 8 after the day’s competition was over. Following is a program, ticket and panoramic photo(43in X 6.7in) of all the athletes who was up for selection and the officials involved. The photo provided is a photo of a photo as the actual photo is rolled up right now and I don’t want to damage it any further. Ive added the description of the photo from when I bought it. I’ve bought a frame from the 1910’s to have the photo framed but will have a professional do it as they know how to steam them before unrolling them to prevent tears. I know there is a participation/placers certificate and medals from this event...sure would like to add those to this group. I know Thorpe is not in the program nor competed but he most certainly was in attendance so it represents a huge chapter in his life!

When I said he was added to the team in the Pentathlon I meant the Decathlon! He would be in the photo though. However, I have not scrutinized it to see if he can be identified.

Very nice, thanks for posting! Fun to see the famous names from back then.

I was about to head off to his Olympic stuff when I came across this 1908 14th Annual Penn Relays Program...kind of forgot about it! Thorpe competed in the Hurdles and high jump at this meet and won the high jump. 1908 was still early in his track career for sure. Thorpe actually tried out for the 1908 Olympics in the high jump but did not make the team while his teammates Louis Tewanima and Frank Mount Pleasant did.

To get the athletes and officials to the 1912 Olympics the Olympic committee rented the SS Finland to get them all there. A small track was installed, pool installed with harness for the swimmers among other things to allow the athletes to train. The discus throwers even drilled a hole in a discus and attached a rope to it and threw it it off the deck and then retrieved it with the rope! I have many favorite things in my collection but this one might be at the very top considering I’m a track guy! This is a passenger list for the SS Finland for the sailing to the Olympics! Only seen one of these in the years I’ve been collecting. Check out General Patton on the list also as he participated in the modern pentathlon in the 1912 Olympics!

I’ll have to back track later to show my inauguration of the stadium ticket and opening day ticket for the 1912 Olympics..just can’t locate them right now. I have several tickets for various events that Jim Thorpe was at and the one shown here is for July 12, 1912 when he long jumped 22ft 7in to place 7th that day. 2nd picture shows era real photo postcards of the SS Finland that took the team to the Olympics, 3rd and 4th photo shows various views of the Olympic stadium, 5th photo is of a stadium press pin that whoever interviewed him had to have been wearing and an ashtray sold as a souvenir and then lastly more cards. These particular cards have 2 sides so last 2 photos are of same cards and their reverse sides.

In 1912 the Decathlon was a 3 day event that started on July 13th and finished on July 15th. It is a 2 day event now. This ticket is a stadium ticket for the first day of the Decathlon competition. The 2nd picture is of a stadium plaque depicting the entrance of the stadium that is one of 2 bronze plaques considered at the time to be the top souvenir offered at the games. Last picture is of more cards in my collection.

This next ticket is for day 2 of 3 days of the Decathlon...hope to get a ticket for the third day someday! After 3rd event on day 1 Thorpe took the lead and never relinquished it! 2nd photo are pages from a baseball magazine that came out just before the Olympics. 3rd/4th picture is of a Swedish Olympic program that has a map of venues, restaurants etc...5th photo is of a stamp that was sold for raising money for the Olympics and also a photo of Thorpe at Olympics taken by ‘The N.Y.H. Service’.

Early 1900’s Fashion Plate

Never seen that! Did that come out of a magazine? I’m not familiar with what a Fashion Plate is...can you tell us more about its origin?

Sure. Back in the day, clothing retailers would have large, fashion books highlighting the latest clothing lines along with fabric samples for customers to select from. The pages were made of thick cardboard about 16”x 20” which is the size of this plate. To ad some variety to the book, manufacturers would include some pages of interest other than simply fabric and clothes. This piece is framed and matted, but as I recall, the back of it had fabric swaths on it. There is one fashion plate that I’ve seen but I don’t own, that pictures one of the Yankees teams of the 1920’s. I own two other plates, one is a generic baseball player in his uniform with the same player next to him in a suit and straw hat. The other is a generic golfer in the latest golf fashion. There are some plates out there that picture famous players, such as Ty Cobb, modeling suits, etc. These usually bring pretty good money. These are really getting hard to find.

Exactly. These are extremely tough to find. Have never seen that Thorpe before. Nice piece!

I have this Royal Taylor of Frank Gotch who was a world champion wrestler in the 1910s.

What’s also cool about that piece is that is what Thorpe studied at Carlisle...Haberdashery and Tailoring!

Wow. That’s a beautiful plate and stunning display. Here is my baseball plate. Some have said the guy resembles Christy Mathewson, but I don’t think so.

Didn’t know that about Thorpe and his college major. That is quite interesting and ironic.

This is an original Bain photo of Thorpe throwing at the AAU All Around Championships on September 2; 1912. I had not looked at this photo in 10 years and I originally posted it here as an Olympic photo but I just realized Thorpe was not in his Olympic uniform but his Carlisle uniform so he is actually competing at Celtic Park in the photo! Really kind of thrilled because I did not think I had an original item from that meet!...first 2 photos show front and back of it. Photo 3 has some oddball items, 4th photo is of a watch fob souvenir, a pin and a bronze plaque of the stadium from the Olympics. Rest of the photos are of various stickers and cards that are primarily foreign issues. I’ve taken front and back of them and they are in same order so you can compare fronts to their backs. The very last photo is of items with blank backs except for the pep stamp.
