Nice looking Mays for the grade. A good way to start the new year. I have my eye on several Mays cards but have not yet pulled the trigger on any of them.

Thanks eBay bucks!

Upgrades to my 1975 Topps set. The George Foster and Reggie Jackson really needed upgrading and I'm glad to add these 2 specimens.

I will literally be going from 4 season tix down 2 for UGA football thanks to this purchase. My weekend binge is now over but it was fun while it lasted.

Yossarian 01-05-2015 02:45 PM

Boom! That is a hell of a Mantle, Russ.
Congrats on a great pick up.

Thank you sir ! I went into the weekend saying all I would do is make fairly inexpensive purchases to upgrade the 1975 Topps set and get some inexpensive mid-low grade Red Mans.

Well, then an opportunity came along I could not pass on. :)

That's a heavy duty, Mick, Hank! But let's single out that 75 Jackson-- that's my type of card. Would come back a 9 several times out of 10 submissions. Great job on that one. Sweet card.

I've been sleeping on the 55 Mays; that action scene is awesome.

Speaking of 1975 Topps PSA 8's that are close to 9's.................Did anyone on here pick up this 75 Topps Mike Schmidt last night off ebay ?
Man, I wanted this one bad but lost the bidding war.

Congrats to whoever got this gem.

I was the underbidder. I do not like losing auctions ;) Hats off to the winner.
I was so salty at missing that one that I treated myself to this as a consolation:

And got a new Epson scanner with which I was finally able to take a proper scan of the new Mick. Idiot that I am, though, I put a long vertical scratch in the beautiful SGC holder. It barely shows up in the scan but I will have to get it reholdered down the line.

What kind of Epson scanner did you get?

pawpawdiv9 01-07-2015 04:35 PM

You guys are on FIRE!!! Takes me a bit longer, Always enjoying the hunt. May have a show & tell by the end of the month.

MattyC: Love the Rose RC..been looking at getting one of those for my RC collection. Prices are outragious on them and the centering issues i seen on them.

jimtigers65 01-07-2015 09:29 PM

Today has to be one of the best for me in regards to collecting. My co-worker who last month gave me a 1968 Bench presented another gift to me; a 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan! This was the last card I needed to complete my 1968 set. I was speechless! When he gave me the Bench card he wanted to post a photo of the exchange. So we took a photo of the Bench card and he posted it with the caption "Now only needs the Ryan". His uncle saw the post and sent him the Ryan card to give to me.

After seven years my 1968 set is now complete!

Exhibitman 01-08-2015 09:25 AM

Well given the abundance of great stuff this post is a tad embarrassing but I got some OPC cards for my Aaron player set and my everything 1971 Topps collection:

Busy month for 63 Rose RCs. Not as nice as Matt's but definitely worth it for the grade!

Hammerin'Hank 01-08-2015 01:55 PM

Nice cards, Adam.

I go on mid - to low range raw card binges all the time. It scratches the itch all the same.

Jason, your Rose rookie looks EX + to me. Great find and it looks under-graded unless there is a crease the scan doesn't show.

Jim, congrats on finishing off the 68 Topps set. You must be a great guy to get a Bench and Ryan RCs given to you.

Bestdj777 01-08-2015 08:42 PM

Picked up 2 more 51 Mantle Photocards (had the third in my collection) and an Exhibit postcard that was cut from an advertising poster. The sticker is on the penny sleeve, but I left it there so I could distinguish it when looking through my photo album.

Love the vintage OPC! I picked up several late 60s and early 70s OPC cards for my Cardinals collection. I have not had a chance to scan yet.

Do you have any of the 1974 OPC? Those are tough to find!

Thanks,
Scott

And a nice, bright '59 Mantle. Centering could be better but I love the way the red just pops on this.

Hey, Mike--do you live in Austin, and is so what part ? From 1985 to 1990 I lived in the Woods of Westlake, just across 360 from Westlake HS. Austin has changed a lot since then, but is still a blue dot in a red sea .:)

Yes, I live in horrible, stinking, lousy Austin. So anyone reading this - please don't move here. And if you know someone thinking of moving here - tell them it's a terrible place to live. ;)

I've been in Austin since '72. Have lived off I-35 just south of the river for the last 30 years. Even though it has changed an awful lot, I love it here - but don't tell anyone that. Remember: Austin = horrible place to live.

The Woods of Westlake is a very nice area. I worked near there for a very short period of time in '91. One definite negative change since '90 is the traffic. I think our traffic is worse than Houston.

Yes, Austin is still a blue oasis in a red state, but it is getting a little less blue. :(

PS I love all the little seen cards you post. Please keep it up.

Nice MLB rookie card of Irvin, Rob. Of course, now you just need to come up with his El Indio card from '48-'49, good luck with that one.

Matt - as always, great pick ups.
I am usually not much on the 'floating heads' league leader cards, but I am a fan of the '62 HR leaders card for what it represents from a historical/significance perspective. I picked one up last month. Tough one to find with good centering and absence of print flaws.

No one remembers, but Jim Gentile had a hell of a season in '61 as well. Those other 2 guys completely overshadowed him, however

Thank you and I share your exact same logic behind the 62 HR leader card. I felt the card represents a special moment historically in the game and it just charmed me based on that. And I also love how it shines a light on Gentile's "lost" season, as well. Completely agree.

I was also impressed by how tough the card is to find with centering and decent image quality; I love cards like that and this one had nice centering.

I also liked how Mantle seems to be looking at Gentile, as if to say, "What the hell is this guy doing here?"

Exhibitman 01-14-2015 12:26 PM

I had a 1974 Seaver OPC but sold it. Nice card too.

That Mantle exhibit is probably not from a poster. If it is on slick thin paper and machine cut it is more than likely made for attaching to the machine headers. The company printed cards on that kind of paper, probably because it was cheaper and lighter than card stock for the advertising pieces, which were offered to vendors as freebies. Many times more difficult to find than a regular card. If it is on thicker cardboard but not like a typical card and is handcut or of a dimension different than a standard card, it may be some kind of interim production item. I have a few of them from the early 1950s.

Just picked this up from a fellow board member. I think this looks way better than a 4. Not perfect centering, but not too shabby either.

The Ryan rookie holds a special place in my heart. When I was 10 or 11 years old my best friend and I used to play "tag" with his younger sister. "Tag" consisted of, try to catch us, but you'll never be able to since you're five years younger than us. We used to say "if you can catch us, we'll give you a Nolan Ryan rookie card". Of course, which we didn't have. Now I do.
