Help With Interpreting Don Newcombe Photo

I'm a bit mystified by the meaning of this window display at a bar in Glendale, Queens, NY circa 1956 or 1957. The bar is Henny's Tavern, owned by Henny Vehling who was a long time major booster of the Brooklyn Dodgers. This 8 x 10 photo (1 of 3 photos I have of this display) is one of 100+ photos from his personal collection of Brooklyn Dodgers memorabilia which I acquired in 1990 after his death.

The photo shows a window display with a caricature of Don Newcombe "resting in peace" in Montreal.

The only "theme" I can come up with is Newk's poor 1957 season, and perhaps more specifically his August 27th outing against the Cubs where he surrendered four runs on four hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings. Newk had succumbed to alcoholism by that time.

From all I have come to know about Henny Vehling this was NOT intended as a racially motivated display, albeit how insensitive its appearance in 2016.

Any insights?
