So does anyone know what this could be?? It was in an email I just received.......

Ronnie73 08-08-2017 01:36 PM

I got that email too. First thing that came to mind was the PSA 8 T206 Wagner.

prewarsports 08-08-2017 01:37 PM

The 1869 Cincinnati Reds sale of their trophy balls, equipment and uniforms after their World Tour would probably disagree with the above statement :)

Peter_Spaeth 08-08-2017 01:39 PM

Stuff has sold for more than the Wagner. There was a Ruth jersey as I recall in SCP Auctions. Also Naismith's original rules. I would guess it's the Ruth jersey.

sports-rings 08-08-2017 01:43 PM

I doubt there would ever be a general consensus among collectors what the most historical piece of sports memorabilia piece is.

Maybe they're selling the New York Yankees franchise?

wondo 08-08-2017 02:11 PM

Are they doing Sheen's stuff?

ALR-bishop 08-08-2017 02:20 PM

More than $3M?

I don't recall anything like that, please enlighten me.

Ted Williams' Head?

oldjudge 08-08-2017 02:25 PM

My guess is that the Player's League documents coming up in the fall Memory Lane auction are more significant.

Snapolit1 08-08-2017 02:31 PM

Recall last year Goldin was on TV talking up something else as being the greatest most amazing stupendous item that ever saw the light of an auction floor. Obamas first State of the Union address I think.

MartyFromCANADA 08-08-2017 02:47 PM

It's an Aaron Judge cracked bat...lol. :D

Henderson rookie PSA 8

mechanicalman 08-08-2017 03:00 PM

Love him or hate him, Goldin's marketing/PR is something to behold.

x2drich2000 08-08-2017 03:01 PM

I think the Ruth jersey is the most logical guess since the Naismith rules were supposed to be donated to KU. However, the use of the term "sports related collectable" makes me think of something other than baseball.

While they are unique (Saw them at the National) I am not sure they will have the mass appeal of whatever Goldin is offering.

One of Mordecai Brown's fingers.

oldjudge 08-08-2017 03:42 PM

A 52 Topps Mantle has mass appeal, but it is just a common card. The documents in Memory Lane are probably unique and are from one of the most significant moments in baseball history.

packs 08-08-2017 03:50 PM

Only if you care about that moment. I would guess most fans do not.

Scocs 08-08-2017 03:52 PM

Film footage of the kid telling Mr. Jackson, "Say it Ain't So, Joe"! Of course, it's silent and uses intertitles, but still....

MVSNYC 08-08-2017 04:00 PM

Ok, I'll play...the way it's being hyped up, it's gotta be something like...

Ruth Red Sox Uniform
Joe Jackson Uniform
PSA 10 1952 Topps Mantle

Jackie Robinson's first contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization?

I was thinking the uniform Jackie wore in his debut.

SCP sold a Ruth jersey for $4.4 million a few years back
http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/7...ord-44-million

Based on the wording I don't think this would be a card.

It seems like it would have to be linked to both a player (or possibly a person who is not an athlete) and an event that has great significance.

For the player to matter enough they would have to be transcendent, so there's not a huge list:

Ruth, Gehrig, Jackie Robinson and maybe a couple others in baseball, Jordan in basketball (don't think anyone else comes close), don't think anyone in football or hockey is there. Boxing has Ali. Not sure anyone in golf matters that much. Anyone in the Olympics?

Beyond that there could be non-sports personalities although I can't think of too many options right now. Maybe the golf equipment used on the moon?

Peter_Spaeth 08-08-2017 05:21 PM

If he is saying truthfully it's the most valuable, then it's already sold at least once, and that makes it the Ruth uniform. Otherwise no way to know.

IF it has sold once, wonder why he is saying they cannot reveal what it is. What is the shroud of secrecy??

Hype. Of course he can reveal it even if it hasn't sold before, I would guess, but saying he can't adds to the hype. If he revealed it in advance who would pay attention to the press conference?

yanks12025 08-08-2017 05:36 PM

Ken said on GUU it will be the first sports related item to sell for 8 figures.

Peter_Spaeth 08-08-2017 05:43 PM

If it's a new item it will be interesting to see whether the provenance is controversial.

I am sure it is every bit as real as the Babe Ruth catchers mitt.:)

BeanTown 08-08-2017 05:56 PM

Jay's non baseball card guess is just a year off. It's Cy Young's Cleveland Spiders full uniform along with other rookie items. It will be a massive once in a lifetime group of items that has never been to auction.

Not after the last time Goldin was called out here. He lawyered up, sent cease and desist letters and it was business as usual. People could not remove their posts fast enough.

Doubt even a collection like that would get to 8 figures though. Cy Young these days doesn't have that kind of cache.

this....

MVSNYC 08-08-2017 06:52 PM

Good call on Jackie debut uniform. That's the only possible (single) piece that could truly fetch 8 figures.

Aquarian Sports Cards 08-08-2017 06:54 PM

If your posts stick to facts the law is on your side. Doesn't mean you want to get embroiled in a lawsuit even if you are going to win, but the truth is ALWAYS a good defense in a case like that. Of course if what was posted here was conjecture that may hurt his sale, then he probably did the right thing.

yanks12025 08-08-2017 07:09 PM

Could also be the White Bronco, because it will be on pawn stars on monday night. So maybe they made a deal for the car and will be at the press conference later in the week with Ken? But I doubt that would be worth anywhere near 10 million

Bpm0014 08-08-2017 08:20 PM

No way it's the Ruth uniform. Thomas Tull owns that and I doubt he needs the money. Does anyone know if he's a member on here? He has one of the most incredible collections known.

I do not think that he owns the Ruth uniform anymore.

KendallCat 08-08-2017 09:56 PM

Only items I can think of would be Wagner PSA 8 or a Mantle PSA 10 and don't think either are coming available for sale IMO.

KC

BeanTown 08-08-2017 10:28 PM

Second guess is a newly discovered Old Mill rookie Cabinet of Joe Jackson.

oldjudge 08-08-2017 11:09 PM

I don't think that any card (or postcard) could draw eight figures. I can think of only two players whose uniforms could even get close to this number-Ruth and Gehrig, and it would have to be a very special uniform. I doubt any Jackie Robinson uniform would even be close. My bet is that it is Gehrig's uniform from his "luckiest man" speech.

Vintageclout 08-09-2017 02:24 AM

Ruth Uniform?

Jay - you just planted a seed....how about Babe Ruth's called shot Uniform and/or bat?

MVSNYC 08-09-2017 04:17 AM

Jay- Lelands sold the luckiest man speech uniform around 1999.

An [authentic] Joe Jackson 1919 uniform could fetch millions (I doubt 8 figures though).

I think the only piece that could approach 8 figures would be Jackie's debut uniform. Such historical importance.
