1950 Bowman

Posted By: Fred Y
I'm surprised no-one has mentioned the 1950 Bowman set, so will start off w/ a couple of pages from my set.

It is the first FB set I ever collected, following on the heels of my '50 Bowman baseball. As far as I can remember, all cards were available most of the Fall that year and because I had no holes in the set to finish years later I assume they were all available in equal numbers.

I tried to pick a couple of sheets that were colorful, w/ interesting poses and a couple of Stars.

First are #37-48 w/ Bobby Layne, Leon Hart and the Rookie cards of Marion Motley & Otto Graham.

Second pages are #133-144 (last 12 cards in the 144 card set) w/ Pete Pihos and the last card of the immortal Rookie Knox Ramsey!!

Will be looking forward to seeing some others post cards from this fantastic little set!

Posted By: Fred Y
I made the leap & sent my '50 Bowman complete set to SGC for grading.

This is a set like my '52 Bowman Large (shown in the '52 Thread) that was put together back in the day & has been virtually untouched to this day. I sent it in for grading w/out ever having upgraded or changed a single card, as I wanted to see how it would fare in today's world--warts and all!

These were bought, played with and stored away in cigar boxes w/ rubber bands around them, altho I did put some cardboard on top & bottom of each stack. (Lord only knows why I did that!)

Anyhow, they came back 100% graded, w/ the average grade in the SGC 80-6 range--a few GOOD-VG and many were SGC 84-86-88. I did get 1 in MINT 9.

Below are just a few I scanned to show, including #1 & #144, but if anyone has a question, comment or would like to see any other card I will be happy to accomodate. Both sets are listed in the SGC Set Registry.

Posted By: Fred Y
Hi Leon--

Thank You for commenting.

I was NOT surprised that they all graded, as I was never one to disfigure my cards or paste them in a scrapbook or similar, but I DID shuffle through them & played w/ them, so getting some nice grades made it alot easier to stand the expense!

I have a '50 Bowman baseball set as well, but being as how I did not like FB as much as Baseball, I don't believe they would fare as well in grading as I played w/ them alot more!

I'm going to start going though them soon to see how I think they would do compared to the FB!

Posted By: Paul S
Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but Fred, I don't recall you having posted any of your 50 Bowman Baseball (set!!) on the postwar baseball board. We've had a lot of good threads on them over there. You'll pick up a lot of good info too.

Posted By: Fred Y
Actually, I haven't gotten around to pulling out the set yet, so I haven't gone through them to check condition.

They are like the football in that they are in 12 pocket sheets, which I did yrs ago.

I'll try to make a point to get to them soon & at least post a few scans!

Thanks for your interest & for reminding me!
