Nice Nellies. During the last few weeks I have been rebuilding my 1950's card collection. In an effort to fund my 71 Bucs memorabilia purchases I sold many of the cards I originally had. As you can see I'm not partial to any one TPG and prefer mid grade cards that I find visibly appealing and affordable. I think the Mantle BVG 4 has great eye appeal and is comparable to the PSA 6 Clemente. for that reason I briefly considered selling the Clemente to upgrade it. I decided against it. The 55 Mays SGC 80 is an upgrade.

KCRfan1 03-02-2016 10:32 PM

Those are some sharp cards Mike!

71buc 03-02-2016 10:42 PM

Thanks Lou! I have been buying memorabilia for so long I forgot how much I enjoy the 1950s cards.

EYECOLLECTVINTAGE 03-03-2016 08:06 AM

Does the messed up photo affect the overall value much?

Nice haul, mike!!

The 56 Mick and 'Berto are 2 of my favorite cards of all time. Nice cards!

jb67 03-03-2016 10:00 AM

A Nellie Fox to start the month. Nice looking Nellie for sure!

Mike those are some visually appealing mid-grade cards you landed. A Mantle, Mays and Clemente no less. A great start to the month of March.

EYECOLLECTVINTAGE 03-03-2016 02:38 PM

So I just got this in the mail. Does anyone think it's worth trying to cross this over to SGC? How is this not higher than 7?

Wow! Impressive Bowman Jackie Robinson. You have been quite busy. I am most envious. I have never submitted a card to a TPG and if that Jackie was mine I think I would leave it in its current slab.

Thanks a lot! I appreciate the words of advice. I so badly wanna see if SGC would give it an 8. Anyone think it could?

DBesse27 03-03-2016 06:43 PM

No. It's a nice card, but I actually think it's a little over graded, not the other way. Looks like a 6 to me. Still, nice card!

Received both of these in last week or so. The Paige was a card that my Dad and I always looked for when we went to card shows while growing up.

Fair enough. I know you're not. Just trying to understand so I can better gauge what I should do.

DBesse27 03-03-2016 07:15 PM

I would leave it as is. The strictest grading company said it's near mint. Keep it that way.

Edit to add: those are awesome 52's!

If you haven't done so, take a look at the PSA grading criteria. It's a great place to read about what they look for in a card before assigning a grade.

I agree that the corner wear and general toning on the borders (and looks like possibly a stain on the bottom right and a print flaw on the left side?) would keep it far from an 8, and probably if it were submitted to PSA today, it would get a 6. One thing to look for when buying PSA is the age of the slab. If the number grade (7) is on the same line as the letter grade (NM), then it's an older-generation slab, and PSA is significantly more critical now than in years past, especially with high-end cards. It might cross over to an SGC 84/7, but I don't think higher.

But it's an absolutely beautiful card. Who cares what the slab says?!

In all the searching I have done, this is 100% true imo. All one has to do is look at cards on here and/or E-Bay and compare the new with the old.

I have noticed it numerous times and stated numerous times, I wish I had my cards graded back yrs ago when I received my Topps cards and not waited until now to do so. :(

Ever since finding out this little "ugly duckling" existed a few years back (think discovered on board), I've been interested in picking one up. Very happy to add this one, which when in hand is definitely a beauty.

Keep the Jackie as is, nice card. A modest pick-up for me, that eBay x3 bucks is hard to resist:

Beautiful card, but I have to agree on the grade. I'd be afraid it would come back a 6 if cracked and resubmitted due to the corners.

Definitely not an earth-shaking purchase, but I picked this up last night at a good price. Will be a nice addition to my Aaron collection.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...70f63936a5.jpg

Speaking of Hank Aaron. I just picked up this low grade copy along with a mid-grade Mantle and topped it off with a high-grade JB. Very pleased to add these to my collection.

itjclarke, Awesome score with the 77 Chong Henderson. You don' find those for sale in that grade every day. Congrats.
Peter that Aaron Johnston Cookies is a stunning card. I hope to add one to my collection some day. Congrats.

How is that Aaron a PR-1? Is the back damaged quite a bit or are there creases etc that your pic doesn't show?

jb67 03-06-2016 12:56 PM

Back is pretty clean. The reason for the PSA 1 is a tiny pin hole at the top left of the cap. My kind of PSA 1. Card has no creases. Hard to imagine many better looking PSA 1's of this card.

I see it now.

And I agree, great pick up :)

Why i love mail day

I am in LOVE. If I were to resubmit it, does the centering keep it from moving up any? So happy to add this card to my collection!

I know what you are asking. I generally charge for my opinion, $575 an hour if your are interested. You get minimum help for free :)

On a serious note, no one can say with certainty whether it would get a bump or not. It's a nice card, but, in my opinion, has some condition issues and probably isn't a candidate for a bump. I don't play the grading game very often, so I'd defer to more qualified people if any weigh in.

$575? Other members only charged me $350 so far. You're a bit high with your price to be honest :) Thanks for the time and opinion. I appreciate it.

You now own a 53 Robinson with about 70/30 side to side. I am going to tell you this no matter what grade or what holder the centering on that Jackie is not going to change. If want better centering buy better centered cards.

Beautiful card, ECV.

Sorry, I can offer no opinion on the grading as I honestly don't know,
but with that being said, is there anyway to tell when (what year, how recent) it was graded last?

Imo, if it was recently graded, then that would be a decent indicator it likely won't be graded any higher, but with that also being said, and the fact grading seems to be much more stringent nowadays, it might actually grade lower if it is an older graded slab?

Either way, it's a beauty and one to be proud of the way it is.

Congrats. :)
