It's not authenticated by two different companies. It is only slabbed by SGC when they still did it for JSA. It is wrongly slabbed as you mentioned, but the mistake is only on JSA.

I've seen more than a couple of that variety authenticated by both jsa and psa. Is it at all possible it was a "late in life" signature?

Nope...it's signed by his wife. The giveaway is the E in Earle and the M in Combs that looks like a W.
