Wtb 1955 topps hocus focus kid gavilan

I want to buy a 1955 Topps HOCUS FOCUS KID GAVILAN card. It's in the sports thrills section, card # 19 of 20. I prefer a card with good exposure. Can anyone help me find one? Thanks, Sam Majors

1955

I am just a baseball collector, but have found the baseball subset of the 1955 Hocus Focus set to be the hardest of all the actually issued Topps sets to complete. I have 21 of the 23. It has only been in the last few years that the baseball checklist was fully known.

I have finished the 1948 Magic Photo and 1956 Hocus Focus baseball subsets, but not sure I will be able to finish the 55

What is your experience on the boxing side ?

Tremendously rare set. Very few examples are known. I've handled a few Moores and Marcianos but have seen only one Gavilan.

It currently resides in a PSA 2 holder. Pop 1. SGC pop is 0.

i recently sold the gavilan to someone on this board...hmmmm

Exhibitman 02-10-2016 01:50 PM

Yep. Guilty as charged.

I think it finished my master set of HF boxing. As I understand it, the smaller sized cards, the singles, were # 1-126, while the larger cards with the perforated edges were #1-96. The Gavilan (116) and Moore (121) would be only available in the small versions, while Marciano (54) would be in both versions. Here is what it would look like [sorry for the crappy scans]:

Who is Gavilan knocking the snot out of on the card?

Looks like Ralph Tiger Jones.

On the Archie Moore, hard to tell from the exposure, but I would guess Harold Johnson is the opponent.

The 48 Magic Photos seem relatively "easy" to find. The 56s were not easy but the 55s seem much harder. Any theories on why that would be ?

Kid Gavilan

AL,
I believe the boxing cards are much tougher than the baseball in the Hocus Focus sets. I have been looking for the boxers for 20 - 25 years. I've had 4 of the Marciano cards and 2 or 3 Archie Moore cards. It was on this board that I found out about the Gavilan card. It had been sold (to Adam?) before I asked about it. I'm interested if another shows up!! Thanks, Sam Majors

Al, David Hornish would be the person to ask.

Sam, my set may well end up in a LOTG auction some time in the not too distant future. Depends on which colleges my kid gets into.

That works on so many levels.

If you need a home for that Young Perez let me know.

Hey, Leon's not the only one who is willing to take one for the team...

I've got approximately 17 years of collecting left in me until my first turns 18. I don't even want to imagine what college tuition will be then.

Maybe Sanders will win and it will all be free. Then everyone of us can just spend as much money as we want on old pieces of cardboard!

Exhibitman 02-12-2016 06:23 PM

Let's leave the politics out of this. You want to spout off about that subject, go to another board.

Oh, and FYI, under the reign of that well-known left-wing pinko commie socialist, governor Ronald Reagan, the University of California offered free tuition to state residents.

Hocus Focus

Speaking of those two guys, anyone have the Roosevelt World Leader card :)

As for 55, I do not think the baseball subset is any easier. It was not until a couple of years ago Bob Lemke was even able to complete the baseball checklist, and I have still never seen the two I am looking for.

Anyone know anyone who has done the entire set ? I have an unopened 56 pack, has anyone seen a 55 pack ?

I will take your suggestion Adam and ask Dave. He is sure a great resource, especially for Topps

th38larg 02-13-2016 12:45 PM

Adam, point taken about leaving politics off this well-manicured board. Just to be clear though, the whole Sanders bit was tongue-in-cheek. Like Alan, I've got my own newborn. Im currently going through the first phases of seeing my discretionary income dry up like a desert oasis.

wake.up.the.echoes 02-13-2016 06:12 PM

Darn, and I had just logged on to start a rousing discussion about whether or not Obama should get to nominate someone to replace Scalia.

Kidding.

This tread is giving me the itch to start collecting the self-developing boxing cards. Because then it would be a slippery slope and I would have to buy more of the 1959 hokus pokus cards (with three different back types) and it would all snowball from there.
