I sent an email stating that I thought these were some ugly forgeries and was told that they had COA's and they believed them to be authentic. Did I jump the gun? I would apologize to the auctioneer if I was wrong, but I do not believe so.

James,

If you don't mind me asking, what auction house were they at? Did they respond cordially?

Not really cordial, but not threatening. They are called Silvertowne. I am not trying to really out them, but can you not even compare the 2 Mantle autos and see that there was no way the same person signed these?

You have to understand that when I say this to a fellow auctioneer they probably look at me like a snitch or that I am jealous of them.

These may take the cake for ugly fakes of the week.

Probably comes with a story...

"I saw Mick in a bar, I just happened to have a couple of balls (and a blue ball point pen) with me and despite the fact that he was really drunk, he signed them for me."

I was surprised to see this as Silvertowne has a great reputation in coins. This is on their website:

"SilverTowne Auctions, LLC holds periodic auctions of coins at various locations, as well as online. SilverTowne Auctions is a joint effort between SilverTowne, L.P. of Winchester, IN and Richard Howard, Inc., dba Howard’s Coin Shop, of Leipsic, OH. Our combined experience in rare coins is well over 100 years!"

I am by no means an expert on autographs but even I can see the shakeyness and hesitation in these autographs.

The only problem with that story is that I saw Mick a few times and on a couple of occasions he was fairly hammered or hung over and he still seemed to write his name very well. That's a clutch performer!!
