Vintage Store Model Bats.. Lets see your rare ones!

Posted By: richard
I was wondering if someone could help me out since I don't know too much about old baseball bats I have a old Spalding bat and I don't know if it is professional model or a store model. The bat looks just like the famous black betsy Joe Jackson bat its weight 39.5 ounces and length 34 inches are also almost identical. It is a Old Hickory Spalding model 156 and that is all it says on it. The bottom of the knob has the Spalding trademark stamped in with a nail in the handle. The bat has been dated pre 1920 and that is all the information I have on it. If anyone has opinions or information on this bat I would really appreciate it thanks, Rich

Posted By: John Harrell
Richard,

If the bat has a Spalding logo on the knob, it is considered to be a store model. There are some exceptions to this as some players were known, in a pinch, to use store models, but generally speaking, that is the rule.

John

Posted By: Matt Hart
The Old Hickory is a nice looking bat. Mears graded with the same specs and model number as yours and determined it was a post 1920 bat based on the model number. For a generic bat to be linked to a star like Joe Jackson, there would have to be a lot of information to validate it. The Old Hickory was a generic bat offered from the company. While on the topic, even the Joe Jackson Old Hickory that was deemed authentic, in my opinion is a questionable bat. Your bat is a most likely a store model, but still has some value.
Matt
