I believe it was Schilling.

That trivia quiz lasted 6 minutes!

cubsfan102003 01-19-2010 09:41 AM

Pettite?

tedzan 01-19-2010 09:43 AM

Curt Schilling

Tista202 and Jim VB guessed correctly.

Curt Schilling did it in........

1993.....age 26 vs. TOR
2001.....age 35 vs. NYY
2004.....age 38 vs. StLC
2007.....age 40 vs. COL

And, remember guys....HE IS NOT A NEW YORK YANKEE :) :)

Nexr one will be much tougher.

Tista 202 was the winner.

I didn't "know" it until I read his answer. It's one of those things that's rattling around in there but wouldn't have come out without his answer.

Edited to add - Pettitte is only 37! He has a distant chance, but he'd have to stick around for 3 more seasons. (And, of course, win a game in the 2012, or later, World Series. I don't think he wants to pitch that long.)

barrysloate 01-19-2010 09:53 AM

Ted's reference to Schilling not being a Yankee is a political one, having much to do with what is happening in Massachusetts today.;)

tedzan 01-19-2010 10:55 AM

Now Barry......why would you think that ? :)

tedzan 01-19-2010 10:58 AM

Jim VB......re..Andy Pettitte

I'm 99% sure that no other pitcher has done this. Guys with very long careers like Steve Carlton, Jack Quinn,
Warren Spahn, CYoung (etc.) don't make it. If I have done my homework sufficiently, Roger Clemens comes
the closest. Although he pitched in 2 games in the 1986 WS, he did not have a Win.

I'd like to see Pettitte achieve this. I think he has 3 more seasons in his southpaw arm. He is a big guy like
Clemons and Schilling and that is in his favor. However, will he be with a Championship team in 2012 ?

I didn't realize Pettitte was only 37. I also didn't realize I misspelled his name earlier. I thought for sure he was older. He's still a pretty effective pitcher, I think he is capable of being around for a few more years.

I know you too well Ted...doesn't look too good for our team today.:(

wow, my first use of the quote function!

Ted, Tom,

There's no doubt in my mind that Pettitte can be effective for a few more years. I don't know if he wants to do it. He talks about retirement every year and has been since he was 32 or 33.

I know he's an unusual guy compared to most in that he seems to truly value family time. He may have difficulty finding a $14,000,000 a year job in the private sector. It would be hard to walk away from that kind of money. The first year the market decides he's "only" worth $6,000,000 might be the year he goes.

I'm not sure Clemens won any after 40 either. He seemed to get a lot of "No Decisions" in his later years.

Edited to add - Just checked. Clemens was 3-0 in his WS career. Wins in 1999, 200, and 2001, at the ages of 37, 38, and 39.

barrysloate 01-19-2010 11:29 AM

Clemens started in 1986, including Game 6 at Shea, but I guess he didn't win any.

He started 2 games in 1986 and got no decisions in either. He had a 6-2 lead in game 2, but only went 4.1 innings. In game 6 he pitched great, but came out after 7 innings. Had a 3-2 lead. We all know what happened after that.

finally

knew the answer to one of these and just happened to log on early...

as for Pettitte...the guy can get it done in the clutch
