1962 Salada Mantle w/ Black Rim

Hi everyone,

I saw an auction on eBay for what a seller reports to be a rare black rimmed Salada Mantle. I know that they made hockey coins with black rims but have never seen a baseball one. Anyone have any insight regarding this coin? I cannot see the back clear enough to tell whether it was taken off of another coin and added to this for some reason. Any time someone discusses "consulting several experts" it raises red flags for me.

Thanks Larry! When I did not see it in the Sports Collectors Digest, I thought it was suspicious. I appreciate you confirming though.

Have a great weekend,

Chris

Yeah, it's even got the telltale ding where it was once pried out of whatever back it came in. In this case right next to his last name.

I think it was fairly common to remove the paper discs from the coins. I have a small batch of them I got years ago. All commons or I'd buy a common to get the coin part. They were removed more carefully and would look just fine in new holders. Eventually I'll run across the right coins, maybe with writing or stains or something.

Salada Coins in Wrong Color Shell

3 Attachment(s)
Hi All:

It IS possible to have a 62 Salada in a "wrong" color shell that was not switched out. See the Cunningham White Sox below in an unopened original wrapper. His shell should be black, but as you can see he is clearly in a red shell! So they did issue some in "wrong" shells.

For fun I have also added a scan of a P.O.P diecut display that shows a Colavito in a black shell (correct in blue) and a Geiger in a red shell (correct in blue). Not saying they were issued like this, just that they were shown on the display in wrong colors!

Finally two uncut strips of coins still in cello packaging.

Fred
