Another Variation of Don Mattingly's Fake Test Card

I got this card back in 1984. The A8 glows under a black light.

... that 33 years later these are still being sold as "test cards" on eBay just confounds me.

Reminds me of the '89 Fleer Ripken 'Test' card. Too bad so many people buy these thinking they are real....

I bought one of those Ripkens, knowing it was a fake, for a modest sum. I think fakes can in some cases become collectibles themselves in a fashion. Have not bought a recent issue, but the SCD Standard Catalog used to list some fake issues as fake issues. Two I remember involved pewter versions of the Gallery of Champions "cards", and Topps miniature "Promotional Samples" which were photos cut from Topps Surf books and pasted on cardboard with Promotional Sample" stamped on back. I bought a couple of those as well since they were in the Catalog.
I have all the Gallery of Champions sets in each metal version, and while there were promotional pewter samples for one of the players in several years, someone, for unknown reasons, created pewter versions of several players from each year. The regular sets were silver, bronze and aluminum. |
Speaking of Fakes
What is a good source of information identifying fakes, copies, cons concerning cards, etc.
