Posted By: <b>barrysloate</b><p>Great to see the new forum has been launched!<br /><br />When I first got into the hobby in 1982, the first "early" set I gravitated to was the 1949 Bowman set. I loved the color schemes, crude photos, variations, and just the overall look of the set. At that time, Ted Z. and his friend Ralph Triplette had written a great article on the mysteries of the set, pretty much laying out the 7 series by sheets and explaining those mysterious 12 that were reprinted with NOF and Print backs. I even went after the odd color variations, such as the slate backs.<br /><br />It brings back great memories, and it was the beginning of my lifelong friendship with Ted Z. Anybody else love the set?

Posted By: <b>Paul S</b><p>We can't edit our posts yet, so along with my above post, (Robbie and Red) yes, I love the set. However, it took me a long time to feel that way. I got them when I was in my teens, when I only "appreciated" it and the players. I guess it just didn't have that pizazz that might turn a younger kid on...colors, size, etc. In a way that's good because the 49s therefore did not suffer the handling abuse many of my others did.

Not the slate ones but the script, name, etc variations.<br /> Here's a '49 sheet I picked up. I had one of these when I was a kid in the '70's, and thought it was unique. Sold it back then when I sold my collection, but when I got back in about 7 years ago found they aren't that tough, at least not the series I had that was double printed on the back. Posted By: <b>Ted Zanidakis</b><p>The 12 variations are equal in "toughness" to the 2nd series of Hi#s (namely cards #181 - 240).<br />This is true since they were printed on the very last sheet to fill it out to 36 cards. You see, there are actually 252 cards<br /> for a complete 1949 set.<br />Have you read my 1949 Bowman article in the 1983 Spring issue of Krause's BaseBall Cards Magazine ?<br /><br />I have extras of all 12 variations in nice condition if you are interested.<br /><br />TED Z
