This is one on my collecting niches and and certainly one of my favorites. Cards inserted into food and beverage products really took off in the 1950s both at the local and National level. Off the beaten track for many, the likes of Stahl Meyer, Drakes, Royal Pudding, Johnston cookies etc. are glorious issues to some of us. I wanted start a thread dedicated to those great products and the baseball items that resulted. Our resident expert Brian Powell ( hi Brian) wrote a fantastic book - Never Cheaper By The Dozen- on these fantastic issues and has taught me a lot. First off, an incredibly scarce beverage issue from 1958. Let's see yours!!!

Lousy scan but hey, it's my guy Billy Pierce! VG3 seems generous but I love this card. It was my first non-base card in my Pierce PC.

Last one...the beautiful Claudia Cardinale. I think this qualifies as a food issue as it has an oatmeal cookie recipe on the back. And yes, I collect cards of actresses I like.

Morrell Meats
Sorry, can't find my images of my Koufaxes; but the Morrell Meats sets are particularly beautiful, full photo, nothing else on front of card. they also are postcard quality shots; some (maybe too many) have static shots in the LA Coliseum without particularly good landscaping, but overall they are a gorgeous set, especially when seen together
If they were a Topps set, I think they'd place awfully high on the thread for best Topps set of all times; they also have decent, stat-backs. |

In Japan the main card maker is Calbee, which distributes all its cards in bags of potato chips.
I'm currently working on the 1975-1976 set which has 1472 cards - distributed one per bag of chips back in the day so you can imagine how difficult it is to track these things down. These are some of the Sadaharu Oh cards from the set. |

Those Swift Meats cards have always creeped me out. Kind of figures that a meat packer would make cards of dismembered players.

It did my heart good, Dave Berg, to read the gracious words you wrote about enjoying NEVER CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN. I have heard so little from collectors who bought a copy, nor from auction houses and PSA's Joe Orlando who were sent complimentary copies. Funny, I sent a detailed note with Joe's, explaining why the cover cards were graded by SGC, AND NOT PSA!!!! What was the use? I still haven't heard from him in a year's time.
The fact it's an E-book on a CD was the only compromise, but that has turned out to be a major stumbling block to collectors who do not wish to put up with the hassle of inserting the disk into their disk drive, and reading it on their computer. Worse, the disk drive is also becoming a thing of the past, along with CDs. You can still order a disk drive for your computer, as an extra attachment.;) Oh well, I guess I did not think collectors would suffer well with Amazon's print-on-demand price of $95. The digital download version sold via Amazon for Kindle devices have shown steady sales. Be that as it may, the niche of regional/food cards, coins, et al is a truly enjoyable, spirited, very competitive, and challenging pursuit for the "hard to get", and sometimes the impossible. Most of them are exotic conversation pieces, after you've first shown one to a fellow collector, and watched his face. Very telling. David, your 1958 Hires Root Beer test issue Willie Mays is a tour de force---truly a regal Say Hey beauty. He looks so happy in the photo, a must with a great Willie Mays card. I've always preferred the Hires sets without the tabs. I just like the look.

I posted this photo last July on the still current Mickey Mantle thread. Figured since these are mostly regionals, it would fit the thread.;)
Many of these items in my case are among my prized regionals: a pair of 1962 JELL-O mint unfolded boxes, a pair of 1961 Bazooka panels, and an SGC 50 1954 Stahl-Meyer Franks Mickey Mantle. The latter's technical grade would easily cause one to woefully underestimate this magnificent beauty. For the centered Mantle aficionado, it is 50-50, 50-50 dead-centered, extremely unusual for a 54-55 Stahl-Meyer. On top of the case is another 1960 Post Cereal Grape Nuts Flakes Mickey Mantle, the first one SGC ever graded. They were willing to give it a try, but knew it would be ever so close to the boundaries of its over-sized card holder. It JUST fit, and I must say looks awesome. The 1966 Dexter Press Mickey Mantle was, according to fellow collector Keith Olbermann, only available at Yankee Stadium vendor stands. He personally saw them available there that wretched year. The original 1962 Salada Coins ad is not rare, but it is beautiful, and I highly prize it. |

Howard, the term "condition rarity" fits these beautiful gems to a T. There are some interesting stories in my book, NEVER CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, as to why some of the cards look pristine, while so many were damaged from the get-go, winding up looking like the inside of a goat's stomach. As for this '54 Stahl-Meyer, I was able to trace back the provenance to 1969, which was very gratifying---involving the collector-dealer I bought it from, the collector who sold his collection to the collector-dealer, and the story of how that collector got the card in a trade on a vacation trip to California in the summer of '69. Intriguing reading.
There's a super picture of my 1954 Stahl-Meyer Franks Mickey Mantle that serves as the photo for chapter 3. Some time in the past 10 years, my son loaded up the photo on Net 54. As I faintly remember, it was to a thread involving cards you felt took your breath away. Perhaps if you're adroit in your searching, you'll find it. I tried, and failed! It really wasn't the price so much as I was setting a personal precedent in buying a racing card. With my interest in racing, it's strictly 1/43rd models, books, VHS tapes, and now DVDs. I did not need another expensive hobby!!! Ha! Anyway, the poignant card of Mr. Cobb will go perfectly with my masterpiece 1/43rd scale model of one of Honest John's most famous cars---his 1935 Napier-Railton as he raced at Brooklands in 1935, when he broke the lap record at 143 mph. He is the gent I said who likened racing at Brooklands to standing at an open window of a very tall building----and seeing how far one could lean out without falling off!!!! So, I envision pairing my fairly rare factory-built model with the John Cobb cigarette card. The photo on the card appears to have been from the years he raced at glorious Brooklands. Considering that only a handful of racing cards sell for over $500, a dollar short of 17 grand was probably a bit optimistic. Seventeen grand for a Wendell Scott card would be the equivalent of about $85 billion for a T206 baseball Hall of Famer. Seriously, though, congrats on the pickup. I do want to bump the vintage racing thread soon, however. I have a book review and my excitement is building for the release of a cool, different racing book. |
Thanks, Eddie. I doubt anyone on Net54 even knows who John Cobb was, but I was pleased as punch to get the card once I finally decided to buy it. There was obviously not any demand for the card, but paired with my awesome model of his Napier-Railton, it will make all the difference.
Wow---- $17 K for a Wendell Scott card from the late 80s. Even if someone was going for the finest PSA set, that price reflects true lunacy (i.e. GREED). It would not be greed if the set was wildly popular, or if the driver was wildly popular to collect. Racing collectors don't go down that road, I feel, because after all, cards of the drivers are relatively few. Since you are not into models of the great drivers, but prefer cards, I really was pleased for you when you landed that Marhoefer A. J. Foyt. Hearty congratulations, Dale, on your immense cachet of Post Canadian, as well as your beloved Bee Hives. You presented them beautifully.
I only have a pair of graded Bee Hives, and an ungraded Turk Broda from the early 60s when Bee Hive offered some all-time greats to go with their current player line. I envision a boy redeeming a valuable Bee Hive label to send away for a premium of his father's boyhood hero. I might be wrong, but I doubt it. Then again, dads would regale their sons with enthralling stories of seeing their own favorites at Maple Leak Gardens, or hearing Foster Hewitt wax lyrical about an impossible play ingeniusly pulled off. His words would become emblazoned in the son's mind, thus creating a hero over the airwaves! The pose of the great Turk moved me deeply; I absolutely love it, and will pay the PSA piper to get 'er graded. Hey, bro, do you purchase your '52 Topps bb raw, and then submit, or graded, or both?
