Posted By: <b>darren</b><p>I know this may difficult for some of you, but if there were no pre WWII baseball cards out there, what post WWII set would you collect?<br /><br /><br />For me, the 1952 Berk Ross. The set includes vintage cards of Joe D., Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Stan Musial, and Jackie Robinson---no other set has such an inclusive line up of HOF Legends. Of course, I do collect post war as well and do collect this set.

Posted By: <b>Joann</b><p>2000 Pacific Private Stock. These had a kind of half painted look - it was both modern and throwback at the same time. And to me the regular cards looked much nicer than any of the several chase cards in the set.<br /><br />Someone in another thread was right. The companies went overboard and issued way too many to try to keep up with It really killed the fun of being involved with the newer cards - even gorgeous sets like this one.<br /><br />Joann<br /><br />lololol Cobby. Posted By: <b>Todd Schultz</b><p>there are a bunch of favorites--face it, we all grew up post war.<br /><br />I love 1961 Peters Meats- as a Twins fan, it makes sense.<br /><br />I also love Hires, Wilsons, Red Man,'54 Johnston Cookies, and 10 or 12 others. And I haven't even mentioned Topps or Bowman- and '63 Fleer are great too!<br /><br />But I have to agree with Anthony, 1953 Bowman Color stands alone, IMHO.

Aside from the fact that the text on the backs isn't nearly as interesting or as well written as that on comparable Topps cards, the photographs are truly works of art. I have noticed that virtually every player in the set not only has a great pose, but they seem to genuinely be having a good time during the photo shoot. I've always imagined that the Bowman photographer was accompanied by a beautiful, charming woman who flirted with the players while he (or she?) worked. Regardless, he (or she?) was truly an outstanding photographer ... I have always been curious, not only the photographer, but the artist (s?) who created the wonderful 1950-52 Bowman sets. If anybody has any info on this, I'd love to hear about it ...<br /><br />As for honorable mention, I'll go with 1948 Signal Oil, 1950-52 Bowman, 1952-53 Mothers Cookies, 1959 Morrell Meats and 1961-62 Bell Brand ...<br /><br />

I like 1951 Bowman for the incredible artist's renditions of Berk Ross' photographs; many of which were cropped tighter in the 1950 Bowman set. Nonetheless, I like the "crude" looking sets from 1949 -- Leaf, Bowman and Bowman PCL.<br><br>DavidVargha@hotmail.com

Posted By: <b>BigHurleyHick</b><p>Growing up when I first started collecting I always liked the wood border 1987 Topps that my brother gave me.<br />Then around 1992 my dad pulled out his cards that were in plastic bags in his closet. I remembered liking the '55 Bowman TV cards. I know that's a set some people dislike. It was rather sad though going through that group of cards and seeing a mouse had nibbled on the Mantle.<br />Right now I'd like to put together the 1955 set. My dad recently passed away so I was left with all his cards. It's probably the easiest set of all his cards to put together. He already had about 35% of the set and it also contains the least number of cards for a Topps set. It also makes it easier that Mantle isn't in the set, and he already has the Aaron, Mays, Williams, and Clemente.

I like the portrait artwork, I love the Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige cards, and I think a high-grade 1953 Topps card is one of the most beautiful things in the hobby.<br /><br />-Al

There was only one color t.v. in his neighborhood in 1956 and he thought the design was so cool as a kid. I too enjoy the horizontal set with the nice rich brown borders and the little color t.v. insignia. <br /><br />When I started doing vintage cards, I immediately gravitated towards that set and it looks great in a binder.<br /><br />My next few sets are ones that I love because they have a wide variety of players, designs, or innovations....<br /><br />1958 Hires...love the knot hole look and when found centered and clean they are very attractive.<br /><br />1953 Topps...loved the paintings but the set really comes together when put in a binder. Beautiful.<br /><br />1952-55 Redman...more painting cards and oversized too. <br /><br />1960-1 Nu Card Scoops...Lots of Hall of Famers and stars in a cheap set with real photos. Nice cards.<br /><br />1978 Topps...I think part of this one is that it was the first packs I remember buying a lot of and trying to get a set of cards. I also seem to look at that binder because the simplicity of the design and simple script and colors are really attractive.<br /><br />Joshua

Great photography, almost all of the stars of the day - with key HOF'ers and rookies, fairly uncluttered look, great backgrounds of stadiums no longer in existance and the first set I consciously remember opening packs of.

They are the first cards I actively collected and it was the first set I pursued when I got bit by the vintage cards bug. They still stand out as one of the classic Topps sets. There are several super post-WW2 sets but for me the '57 Topps set works like no other for tapping into the long-lost state-of-grace of a seven year old baseball fan when I need a break from being a hard-bitten, cynical bastard.

I remember that Mays card with the vivid yellow just knocking the breath out of me and I was hooked. The 1971 set is the first one I really bought in the packs. I still have a handful of them too.

I've got all the HOF'ers on a shelf in plstic holders in my office at work, right next to the RC Cola cans, along with a few other things. They display great.<br /><br />Then I discovered Action Cartridges....<br /><br />There's just too much to collect.
