1872 Scorecard

Any ideas on the final price?

Gary, a lot more than I would have paid, but I try not to substitute my judgment for other collectors’. Perhaps the write up reference to a 1869 reunion caught someone’s eye? That, of course, is a bit of puffing.

Fantastic scorecard but still a shocking price.

Well it is nice to see early scorecard sell that strong. But It is not even a regular season game it is an exhibition. I have been saying for some time that professional scorecards before 1880 are ridiculously scarce. Total extant is less than 200 and maybe less than 100. National Assn and early National Leauge 1876 to 1879 scorecards make very few appearances in Auction catalogs and private collections.
And yet when I open my scorecard album and look at a game that George Wright played in I know I have a piece of baseball history. So in that sense I am glad prices have been low and I can afford to pick up scorecards when they come up. But it seems that the market is waking up my hope is that will bring more of the few that exist out for more collectors to enjoy.

That is shockingly high, kind of Mort Rogers territory. The early appearance of Jim O'Rourke was likely a factor and might explain the price. But it was a very nice early scorecard so at least two bidders appreciated its quality.

I was thinking maybe being the Mansfields, a one year team, was a factor. Also, early scorecards lacked color and this one had the neat green image on the back.
