August Pickups...

1 Attachment(s)
Okay, it's just a tad bit early, but what the heck. I like the Ol' Perfessor's 1965 card (from the same photoshoot) a bit more, but I was able to grab this really sharp, although a bit O/C, 1964 at a great price. As a Mets lunatic, I'm pretty happy about that, as it doesn't bother my eyes much at all...and those corners, beautiful...

Nice one!

Not a Clemente, but a 1958 Topps Vic Power from the Carter Collection...

Low grade and not special, but this card finally finishes my favorite Bowman set, the 1955's that I started in 1999 when I was 8 years old with my father. Last card for our low grade base set and the 326 card master set

Well done! And no worries about alterations or any attempts at conservation.

Nothing wrong with excellent+ cards, but I've found sharp corners give me no more joy than a poor grade card, so I'll leave the nice ones for the folks who care. Collecting on the cheap in low grade and being patient to get the big cards means I can tackle so many more sets than I would to build in EX-MT. Working on all the Bowmans and a full Topps 1951-1975 sets with variations. About 91% through the run now

I hear ya and agree more and more. Honestly, this is just fun for me. I am not trying to impress anyone, and having the sets in a binder is as good as it gets IMO.

Amen, just for fun. It's a great way to connect with the history of the game, and I have a ton of fun reassembling the sets my Dad put together as a child again with him. Whenever I finish a set, there's still the O Pee Chee or Venezuelans, variations and print defects galore to add to it. It's more fun to me not worrying much about value and just enjoying them how they were made to be enjoyed

You should start a thread. I would like to see some up close pics of your sets in binders.

A few highlights from my day at the National.

That RG/TCMA set gave me my first Aaron, Mays, Mantle, etc. when I was a kid, so a lot of sentimental value there.

The Ott is much nicer condition than usual Jason territory, but it called my name pretty hard seeing it in person--had it been online I would have kept scrolling.

The two Campy cards get me close to my "close enough" Campy master set.

And the Cool Papa is autographed and even has a correction on the back by Cool Papa himself!

Speaking of lovin' the low grade, I picked up a starter lot of 66 Venezuelans to go with my Topps set. Tape damage on the front, heavy corner rounding and some creasing, just the kind of cards I love to enjoy

Nice going with the Venezuelan cards and Jason that Papa Bell card is great. I know how much you all love "mint" cards. Here's one that is factory direct....

This Green Tint Moose (jeez...sounds like a low budget porno) is very pricey for basically a common/semi-star card, but I grabbed it for significantly less than what either regular versions or GT's in PSA 8 always sell for...

A hall of famer from my favorite set. It would be absolutely beautiful if it didn't have a pin hole in it. On the other hand, if it didn't have a pin hole in it I wouldn't have been able to work it into my budget.

I love this card, my favorite photo of Mays.

Not technically a pickup, but fresh back in the mail today from grading. I’m very pleased with SGC - both the grade (what I had assessed it at myself...) and the turn time.

These technically came in the mailbox in July but we left on family vacation so I wasn't able to scan/enjoy until August.

Small lot of T206 cards I am not 100% what to do with as of yet.

Batter-Up #57 Greenberg - picked this up with every intention of trading, now I'm not so sure I want to let it go

Just an upgrade to my MC-OC Johnny Hopp card. I normally don't upgrade due to still needing cards but since the current 4 I need are pricey (Pafko, Rizzuto, Berra and Martin) for my low number set, I decided to purchase this card as I thought it was nicely centered (tough card to find centered, imo) and undergraded as a VG-VGEX card.

I thought it looked more EX-EXMN to me but what do I know?

More Peasant Grade pickups for my low grade sets. The last notable 1965 Topps rookies (65 cards left to complete my set) and some variations for the master sets.

$8 for Sonny Jackson RC
$20 for Fritz Ackley RC
$8.25 for the Uecker No Trade Line
$10 for the 1958 Topps Yellow Letter Aparicio, $7 for Bobby Richardson
$3 for the Green Bat Schall
$5 for the 1969 White Letters Moeller

I love round corners and a crease!

A bit off the commodity card path with this one.

That is cool! Not sure that I have ever seen a complete box before.

Wow, I am totally psyched to have grabbed this nicely centered, incredibly HTF 1961 variation (logo is all white - no yellow in wing). I have a PSA 7 (graded through Bobby's group sub), but have never seen an 8 anywhere before this one (and I looked at every 8 and 9 shown in the 'auction prices realized' section)...
