May Pickups

Come on guys! I need to drool over what everyone is picking up. I'll get it started with a nice little pickup. Signed 1933 Worch Cigar card.

I primarily collect cards, but decided to expand my focus a little bit.

Not baseball related but:

Both have full letter JSA. MLK is in his Stride Toward Freedom book.

Now to find a Malcolm X signed piece.

That's a pretty nice focus you got there Shaun.

I'll give you face value for the check Shaun! Okay, I'll double it. MLK is awesome too.

Thanks Tom! A Jackie auto has been on my want list for the past few years - glad to have finally added one. The Civil Rights focus seemed like a good transition to the autograph end of collecting.

I love the Jackie Auto. I've picked up some Type 1 photos of him recently and just got a 1946 Parade Sportive. I think an auto of him is in my near future.

I just picked up a Wags signed HOF first day cover to add to my collection. Ran to the UPS distribution center last night to get it! I think I have a problem! :-)

My first pick-up (worth showing) in nearly five months. While I am not a fan of the medium (I haven't bought a baseball already signed in over 10 years), I couldn't pass up the opportunity of adding the potential hall-of-famer:

Sooooo psyched to add my newest card. A real toughie. Hi Bell died in 1949, so only a 15yr window to sign the card. Now at 81/96

My Holy Grail Of Holy Grails

This Stargell is absolutely my Holy Grail. I knew I would have to pay through the nose to get a signed copy, but was thrilled that in doing so I was able to get a rookie era signature on it. As few of the signed Stargell rookies as there are out there, one that was signed by him as a rookie (or thereabouts) is that much tougher. Paid high but am on cloud nine that I was able to get it.

This Rose just went way too cheap for me to pass up. Rookie era signature (never seen another on his 1963 Topps) on a card that would likely sell for $450-500 without the autograph. Love it.

Thanks Mark. It's been a long road.
If you wish to see them all, follow the link in my signature.

Congrats on Stargell! Many people would be shocked but that's generally always a four figure card. Don't know what you got it for but sweet card nonetheless.

Thanks!

I definitely got sticker shock the first time I tried to get one. I learned fast.

I likely set a new record for purchase price on this one, but I was willing to because of the vintage signature on it. Eventually for my Stargell run I want to get all vintage signatures, and I knew when I saw this one that I may never see another rookie era signed Stargell rookie.

Damn Mark, that is awesome. Congrats on the pickup. How many of the last 15 are possible or probable?

Lordstan 05-19-2016 04:04 PM

Mike,
Long time, buddy.
Thanks.

I have seen examples of all the HOFers that remain. I am not sure if the non HOFers are all available, but have seen copies of most at some point. There are none that are technically impossible.

Lordstan 05-19-2016 08:48 PM

WooHoo. It has been a good year for my Goudey set. With this new one it will be 5 this year after a 2 year drought. Now at 82/96.

A big thanks to Pete Fishman who helped me acquire 3 and Jason May who helped make it possible for me to acquire the most recent 2. I love this board.

mr2686 05-20-2016 07:14 AM

Hey Mark, yeah it has been awhile. Took some time off from the hobby, but getting back in so I can finish off my memorabilia rooms. Should have some pictures of at least one of them soon. Damn, 2 pickups for your Goudey set is outstanding. Hopefully the second half of the year will be just as good.

I just got back from Gothenburg, Sweden where I attended the 22nd World Olympics Collectors Fair. I picked up quite a few original press photos for my archives. Many of the European press photos from the 1940's to the 1960's are smaller than ours, mostly about 5 1/2 x 7 1/2, and very nice quality. Also not too tough to make choices when they were 1 euro each (about $1.22). I also picked up some nice autographed items.

1. Jesse Owens signed program from 1936. Signed in England while the Olympics were still happening in Berlin.

2. Original press photo from the 1956 Olympics signed by Laszlo Papp. This is the gold medal match where he defeated fellow Boxing HOFer Jose Torres.

3. 8x10 original press photo signed by Floyd Patterson. Personalized to the person I purchased it from. It says Christie, but his name is Christer.

4. 1961 Boxing writers dinner program signed by Floyd Patterson, Paul Pender, Billy Graham and Abe Attell (of 1919 Black Sox fame) on the front and Corp. Izzy Schwartz, Archie Moore, Tony Galento, Billy Soose, Barney Ross, Willie Pep, Tommy Loughran, Gus Lesnevich, Ben Jeby, Frankie Genaro, Sixto Escobar, Freddie 'Red' Cochrane, Paul Berlenbach and Lou Salica on the back. A little damage near Patterson's signature, but still a deal.

A few more items. The Olympic Collectors Fair was hosted by the Gothenburg Sports Museum. A nice museum with displays on everything from table tennis to boxing to Olympics, including Ingemar Johansson's championship belt. As part of the show they arranged for some Swedish Olympic medal winners to appear at the show and sign autographs. They also produced 100 postcards for each athlete that was to appear. There were 13 Olympians and one Paralympian that appeared at the show and they signed anything you gave them. They also had 4 Olympians and one Paralympian who were unable to attend who pre-signed the postcards. There were different people each of the three days. On Sunday they placed all of the remaining signed postcards on a table if you wanted extras. The longest line was maybe 2 people and most were people I knew. Here are a few of the postcards.

I've been putting together a Nolan Ryan Strikeout Milestones set. I just got some back from a signing he had. I now have #1, #1000, #2000, #3000, #5000 and #5714 his last. I need a nice stub to #4000 if anyone has one to sell. I would consider trading my full #5000 for a #4000 & #5000 season stub and some cash.

Scott Garner 05-23-2016 02:33 PM
