New Addition to H815 Adam Hats

http://photos.imageevent.com/exhibit...15%20Soose.jpg

Soose turned pro in 1938, had his breakout year in 1940 and won the title in 1941.

Soose's career was so short that the card does help clarify the likely dates of issue of H815s. The pastel colored series was the first one, probably started in 1932, since one of the endorsers was John McGraw and he was canned in 1932 and died in 1933.

I believe it was followed by an issue with a single image but black and white rather than pastel.

I have cataloged several mid-1930s fighters in this style. The issue with the large portrait and action inset was probably next.

The series with the large action image and small portrait was probably the final installment prewar, as shown by the La Motta card. His emergence as a contender was later; he turned pro in 1941.

The only postwar premium I am aware of is this one; the movie was a 1946 release:

Adam,

What do you have the similar Slim Jim / Slidewell Bow Ties issues classified as? (Your book is still packed away from my move earlier in the year) if it's in there.

I just dug about 10 different up going through some photos.

Bob Baker
Tuzo Portuguez
Hein Ten Hoff
Joe Baksi
Bob Murphy
Nino Valdes
Bill Bossio
Sonny Luciano with Steve Ellis
Dave Davey
Vince Martinez

Obviously they were a bit later then the Adam's Hats. Hein Ten Hoff appears to have been in the New York area, only during 1953.

Photos appear to be done by the same studio. "National Studios" which I believe was formerly Cosmopolitan Studios, which was Bryant Studios before that.

I've got most of those check listed. Which are slide wells and which are slim Jim's?

Slim Jim's also have the Slidewell name attached, but they break down as follows:

Bob Baker - Slim Jim
Tuzo Portuguez - Slidewell
Hein Ten Hoff - Slim Jim
Joe Baksi - Slidewell
Bob Murphy - Slidewell
Nino Valdes - Slidewell
Bill Bossio - Slidewell
Sonny Luciano with Steve Ellis - Slidewell
Dave Davey - Slidewell
Vince Martinez -Slim Jim

I had all of those checklisted except Bossio.

I wish the fighter selection was better. Unlike the Adam Hats endorsers, most of the Slidewell endorsers are duds. I can confirm the existence of an Archie Moore, one advertising the Marciano fight, which pins that Slidewell to 1955. I also was told there is a Marciano but I haven't seen one personally.

Here's Murphy's Slidewell artwork used to create a poster for a fight:

There are also a series of endorsement pieces for Knox Hats depicting members of the New York Yankees but they don't have any graphics, just the hat box prominently featured.

Here's the Bossio. Yeah, seems to be a bunch of "Almost was" guys.

As an aside, I went into a vintage clothing store w/the wife a while back and they had a Slidewell bowtie in original box. No boxing stuff, though [yeah, I asked].

I think you and I are the only people who are into this stuff...

Dave I can confirm the Marciano Slim Jim via this PC I just picked up:

As Marciano is listed as a contender and there is a Moore-Marciano item, I am guessing that the span of the Slidewell issues was at least 1950-1955.

D'oh! That hurts me to the core Leon. I'll see your Gomez and raise you a Gomez and a Gomez matchbook, and a 1957 baseball booklet:

That's cool as hell. Never seen it before either. Do any of the other boxers they used exist in postcard form, that you know of?

Exhibitman 12-21-2014 06:46 PM

I've never seen a PC before this one for the Slidewells. I have seen three of them for Adam Hats, issued from a Montreal mfg:
