Hidden Treasure in Vintage Golf Listing

I lost a bid battle for this autograph book, but think the winner still got a very good deal.

If I were the consignor, I would be a little miffed that the auction house failed to recognize/showcase the marquee name in this group.

This probably should have brought double the final hammer. If I hadn't noticed it, the final price would have been much less.

Who are you referring to as the marquee name?

I thought I'd see if anyone else could recognize it, but it is one of the very toughest golf autographs over the past 50 years.

A Claude Harmon that was not as nice as that one sold just last year for close to 5K , and who knows who the others were out of the 32 that were not mentioned , seems like someone would have known that...Guess it was just a busy day :)

Thanks, Jim.

Just when I thought I had gotten over losing out on this, you re-affirm just how special a Harmon sig is! :)

Also missing from the description is Lawson Little, one of the all-time great amateur champions.

This is one of the few items where Ben Hogan and Gene Sarazen would be an afterthought.

You would think that somewhere along the line in preparing it for auction , especially after whatever experts examined it they would have caught it and known.

More than likely there was a Craig Wood in there too as during that time frame Wood & Harmon were almost inseparable.

Don't feel bad though as several months back a large group of baseball and other sports letters sold at a high profile auction for around $3,500.00 , there were several names listed in the description along with a group described as "INSIGNIFICANT OTHERS" that were not mentioned by name and could not be seen in the image , the "insignificant others" were actually QUITE significant :) and should have jacked the selling price to over 20K

It apparently had a JSA LOA. Now that I think about it, it could very well have had a Craig Wood/Horton Smith/etc...

What do they say about spilled milk under the bridge?? :(

Edit: I wonder if the auction house would have an E&O exposure for such gross misrepresentation?

Any hidden gems on this one? Craig Wood is on it but don't know if he's too valuable or not.

The other side is pretty solid, but not sure about this side of golfers?

Wood is the top name here, and along with Harmon, is one of the scarcest Masters champion signatures to come by.

Diegel is pretty rare as well, as he passed in 1951. He is also a major champion.

Ghezzi rounds out the top 3 names, and is also a major champion.

With Wood, this should easily bring $1,000+ in the right setting (ie: a golf memorabilia auction house).

CJedmonton thanks for the help. Dang it, too bad I can't extricate the Wood because this is the other side

I'm sorry, none of those ring a bell ;)

All kidding aside, that's a wonderful piece! As scarce as Wood is, it takes a distinct backseat to those names. If/when you sell, mentioning Wood would make for a nice "oh, by the way...".

Don't worry. I am sure Topps would love to purchase it and make a one if one autograph card.
