Posted By: Steve f
That's a great shot of Jackie. Max, In the background; Is that a trolly trestle or part of Ebbets Field? I've got to get me one of those '53s.

Still have a difficult time with Ryan's omittance from the Cy Young, but that's a discussion for another board.

Posted By: john/z28jd
Its pretty impressive that 3 hall of famers were born on the same day but my birthday is the only one with 4 HOF'ers born on that day! Take that Jan 31st!

One of my favorite all-time Pirates names was born on this day,Jot Goar who wouldve been 137 today if he were still alive

Just so it it isn't completely OT, I also note that George Burns of 1920's playing fame was also born today.

Max

Posted By: barrysloate
I share a birthday with one current and one future HOFer- Jake Beckley and Roger Clemens- but I think nearly everybody shares a birthday with one, given how many there are.

Posted By: peter chao
Barry,

I've only seen pictures of the Brooklyn Bridge and I still have to admit that the background on the '53 Topps Jackie Robinson doesn't look like it. However, Beckett's and others, have said it is "suppose to be" the Brooklyn Bridge.

If it isn't, maybe Topps was in a hurry and just drew something in the background to mystify hobbyists. I wouldn't put it past them.

Peter

Posted By: Steve f
Peter, I read that the artist that drew the '53 Topps was paid $25 per player. Sounds low even by 50's wages, but considering the quality, it appears he was excellent at his craft.

Barry, did the stands at Ebbets sport a coat of Fenway green? PreBig-Dig, the elevated Xway in Boston was this design and color. Is this a El?.. Any opinions on this structure?

Posted By: barrysloate
I don't recognize the green paint, the two stanchions that support the bridge are made of stone, and there are thousands of wires that hold up the roadway. None of that is visible on Jackie's 53 Topps. Maybe it looked different in 1953, but to me it looks like the grandstand at Ebbett's Field.

Posted By: Steve f
Barry, I believe the Coney Island line is elevated. Then again, the artist may have adlib'd the backgrounds as some of the other 1953 Topps Dodgers had TREES and we know that ain't right

Dennis, I suppose all the major city planners decided to paint these obtrusive iron structures green, so the populous wouldn't notice

I think it is the stands as Barry suggested. Can barely make out the same design in this '53;
