Thoughts on Montana Rookie cards?

I have been trying to sell a Montana PSA 10 for a couple months and there just seems to be NO interest. I have had not one offer at feebay or this board. Some scammers on craigslist, but...

Have mine priced lowest at Ebay. Have tried raising and lowering price, but nothing. I checked in with the other sellers of PSA 10s and they all report the same. Crickets.

Some people theorizing that Brady's rise to prominence takes Montana out of discussion as the GOAT, and that this leads to less interest. Maybe, but look at Unitas, Starr, Namath, etc., rookies. All healthy sales.

Anyone have big brain thoughts on the subject?

My .02

Your listing didn't have a photo. That immediately cuts the people who might have interest right away.

Last 3 sales for this card have been:

$8610
$8531
$8584

If the card you are selling is not particularly hard to find, anyone looking for a modern card like this will want to be there (or less if its someone just looking for a deal). Its not like trying to move a low or mid grade 33 Gehrig where eye appeals can make huge differences in the pricing. Possibly dead centered would get a premium, but without a photo thats impossible to know.

At 8K net to you with some photos, the card would likely move or at least get conversations going. If you sold at auction at these past prices, your net would be less of course.

Its a great card to own and best of luck with the sale

where are you finding that data? The PSA auction prices site has VERY different information:

10/21/2019 $8,610.00
7/22/2019 $9,367.00
6/25/2019 $9,610.00
3/31/2019 $11,300.00
/24/2019 $10,450.00
1/31/2019 $10,115.00
1/23/2019 $10,015.00

His image is there. Not sure what you were looking at.

Problems as I see them. Card is well-centered but not perfect on front and back is significantly off center. Image is done with a scanner that is focusing on the case and not the card so the image is blurry. See one of the many threads about scanners for a solution. Finally it's in an old holder. People shelling out big bucks want it in a current holder.

Hope that helps.

1/23/2019 $10,015.00

All depends on a given site's data sources. The data provided above was VCP and other than the sale they have in common was more recent than the PSA data )the other two sales were August 2019 or later) Also even PSA's data shows a distinct downward trend on the card in general. So if you were in the market for one why would you pay even current sales prices if it's trending down? Unless you think it's hit bottom.

mdube16 11-15-2019 11:43 AM

Yes sales data is from VCP
sale dates:
10/19
9/25
8/25

LACardsGuy 11-15-2019 11:54 AM

got it. that makes sense. As for the condition of my specific 10, though, like I said, the other sellers reporting same thing.

What I was asking the forum, though, is not whether it's trending down, as that's clear. It's WHY is it trending down? What changes? Or is it just that it's uncommon enough of a sale that there is very little data, and these could be statistical blips.

mdube16 11-15-2019 12:16 PM

I would love to see a timeline from the POP report of 10s. I wonder if there is a significant increase in the past year or two.

LACardsGuy 11-15-2019 02:46 PM

believe there are 104, but no idea about a year or two ago

Peter_Spaeth 11-15-2019 09:06 PM

I am guessing some of the prices you mentioned are of the big ebay sellers. For whatever reason, the average guy just cannot get those same prices, maddening and irrational though that seems.

after this thread, i decided to send off to pwcc, so should be in action sooner than later.

I have never understood people who want to sell an $8000 card on eBay but are too cheap to spend $70 for a decent scanner. Nothing personal, just something that I have observed over the years.

Update:
Sent to PWCC and they were going to feature it in this week's auction, do a video thing, etc., but then last second sent me an email saying that they were not certain that the PSA case and flip were legit! What what what?

Awaiting getting it back from PWCC to send into PSA to do a Grade Guarantee review.

Oh my. This is crazy stuff.

It is one of the cards faked by the Mexican guy known as Copperfield. Where did you get it?

LACardsGuy 12-11-2019 11:39 AM

Bought via PayPal and credit card from guy on craigslist so as to be covered. he acquired at a Chicago card show 10+ years ago (or so he says). He seemed genuinely upset about all of this, so suspect that he did not know it was a possible/probable fake.

how can you tell what is going on with it? more info would probably help everyone on the thread.

LACardsGuy 12-11-2019 12:13 PM

Here is (admittedly blurry. sorry) scan of my card on the left and image from VCP of a sold card on the right from what seems to be same era. The main difference I can spot is the spacing between 1981 and Topps. I don't know whether this was always consistent.

I looked through sales on VCP going back through 2010, and my card did not appear, so couldn't do direct comparison. https://i301.photobucket.com/albums/...ana%20scan.png

LACardsGuy 12-11-2019 12:29 PM

one more with the spacing just like mine

Also: the barcode scans properly with the PSA phone app. Comes up my card.

Peter_Spaeth 12-11-2019 04:44 PM

See what PSA says, I have no idea.

LACardsGuy 12-11-2019 07:48 PM

will. feel pretty confident that PWCC was just nervous and it's legit. seems like a fake card would not scan properly with the app.

sthoemke 12-12-2019 05:52 PM

PSA 9's have taken a bit of a hit. Plenty of past $600+ sales, but now typical sales hoovering a little above $500.

https://www.psacard.com/auctionprice...ues/273423#g=9

Maybe the trimming scandal has affected sales of PSA 10's, when PSA 9's can be more easily found at about 1/16th the price.

Unitas, Starr, Namath are a lot rarer than the Montana card.

LACardsGuy 12-16-2019 08:22 PM

I put it up on Ebay. What the heck. I'll roll the dice and if it comes in low, I lose.
