Dirty Work - post your Off Linemen

It seems in this hobby, the offensive linemen don't get any love, no matter how great they are. I was hoping to see some linemen cards in this thread.

I'll start with some of my favorite John Hannah cards. I collect Hog and have all of his cards that I'm aware of. Here are some of my favorites:

http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...2%20Hannah.jpg
http://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...nah%20PSA8.jpghttp://i1199.photobucket.com/albums/...auto%20PSA.jpg

And to wrap up, one of my favorite cards I own of another linemen:

Great thread!! I'm a former lineman myself and have been a high school line coach for 25+ years. Here are some of my favorite cards of vintage linemen...and a pic of my FAVORITE lineman...my son. He will be a sophomore this fall.

If I made a list of individuals I would not want to line up across from, Mr. Parker would rank quite high.

Wow! Awesome cards everyone!

Mike, that Hubbard Diamond matchbook cover is really pretty rare isn't it? You would know better than I but there are only a handful of those around, right?

Big Daddy,
So happy to see that you included Wistert w/ your other great linemen. I really think that he belongs in the HoF. He was a 4x All-Pro and a member of the team of the decade from the '40's. He was the best lineman on a team that went to 3 straight championship games (two of which they won) and blocked for a 4x rushing champ.

I also like Conrad Dobler (although not as HoF material). The stories about him & how dirty he was just crack me up!:D

revmoran 06-17-2016 08:09 PM

The Hubbard matchbook has become pricey, but I'd bet there is more than a handful around - I have six, although they're not in the best shape. I think the hardest matchbook to find from that set is Tiny Feather, although there are two from that set I've never found - Maynard Morrison and Matthew Murray.

Completely agree that Wistert should be in the HOF! So should other early NFL lineman that have been completely passed over. Some that should at least be considered include:

George Christiansen
Ox Emerson
Duke Slater
Duke Osborn

The only member of the HOF who spent his entire career in the AFL

pariah1107 06-19-2016 12:28 PM

A couple of my favorite road graders, HOF Jim Langer and College Football Hall of Famer Reggie McKenzie. Division II legend, Langer was a middle linebacker in college (at South Dakota State?), was cut by the Browns, before an exemplary career as the anchor of the Dolphins O-line for more than a decade. The Best Lineman in DII football is given the Langer Award annually.

McKenzie was a two time all-pro 1973-74 who could pull with the very best of them, a key component of the heralded "Electric Company" line in Buffalo. When Seattle acquired him in 1983, it was one of the great experiences of my younger days as a football fan to meet the man at my father's garage in Auburn, Washington. At the time, former Lightweight champion Greg "Mutt" Haugen, was a 22 year-old lot hand at the same dealership. Crazy place in the 1980's, I remember Bill Elliot and his #9 Coors car visited as well. Happy Father's Day, my hero and best friend, Bob Phelan (1929-2014).

Clare Randolph

2 Attachment(s)
I’m late to the party on this thread, but I really enjoyed it. Lots of great OL discussed and images posted.

I just picked up my first matchbook and I thought it would fit in this thread. Clare Randolph was never considered a big star (overshadowed by the great Mel Hein, he did get some recognition late in his career), but his name is listed as the starting Center in just about every Spartans/Lions boxscore I’ve looked at from 31-36 including the 32 "ironman game" game against the Packers, the first unofficial NFL championship game against the Bears (32) and the championship win against the Giants in 35.

According to this PFRA article, his claim to fame was the ability to tackle Bronko Nagurski one-on-one: http://www.profootballresearchers.or.../20-04-761.pdf

Not a bad thing to be known for.

As a collector, I got a good deal - I was the only bidder and picked up the matchbook for a $1.99. I know very little about these and have some questions: Is there such a thing as a 3x5 penny sleeve? Jeff mentioned 3x5 top loaders and six pocket sheets, but with cards I always use a penny sleeve first, so I was wondering if I could do the same with this matchbook?

Also, what year is this Matchbook? 34 or 35 maybe? There was no info in the listing. Thanks.

DBesse27 07-03-2016 05:13 PM

Yes, ultra pro makes postcard sized soft sleeves. Great matchbook!

jefferyepayne 07-04-2016 06:16 AM

Be careful, John, your gonna get hooked on matchbook covers if you aren't careful!

John Spano wrote an excellent article on matchbooks for Gridiron Greats that discusses the various years and difficult ones to find. It's issue #39 if you want to check it out.

In summary, here's how to tell the difference between the years.

1933 - easy to tell, silver color. Bio info has either a green or pink background.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Uu...k=w452-h766-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Mk...w=w325-h640-no

1934 - tan, red, green, or blue color. Picture is colorized. "The Diamond Match Co. N.Y.C." is printed near the striker

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/w_...A=w281-h766-no

1935 - same as 1934 except the pictures are NOT colorized (they are B&W) and "Made in U.S.A. The Diamond Match Co. N.Y.C." is printed near the striker

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/xD...4=w300-h400-no

1936 - vertical bars on R and L sides of player photo differentiates this set of the the ones before it.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/aF...c=w265-h722-no

1937 - exactly the same as the 1936 design. For players in both the 1936 and 1937 set, I believe the only way to differentiate them is that their bios are different. Compare this George Musso bio with the one above.

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/9k...E=w265-h722-no

1938 - back to a silver background but with a yellow football in the center of the matchbook

I don't have any scans of this set but you can find them online pretty easily to see what they look like.

Thanks Guys!

Dan, I'll look into the postcard sleeves.

Jeff, great post! I'm going to conclude my Randolph is a 35 - thanks for teaching me how to fish :)

I do like these, but without paying high BIN prices, they definitely take patience as the auctions don't occur frequently. I'm been focused on a handful of players that I wanted an item in my collection, but no football card exists.

Definitely a 1935.

If you're patient, you can pick these up for far, far less than the BINs on ebay. The best deals are usually through AH's when they are sold in lots.

And Mike - awesome document! That helps me a lot. Thank you. First thing I did was search for "Lavvie Dilweg". He's one of the players on my list that I was pretty sure didn't have a card or a matchbook while an active player and it's looking like that's true.

It's been awhile since I've posted and I just started reading again last night. I have a few of these, but I will just start with this one. It's his only card, at least that I know of.

Thanks Mike and Jeff. I recently missed on one of those - I had no idea it would sell for more than a few dollars - I had a low snipe set that never went off: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Matchbook-Co...MAAOSwEjFXdcLs

Jeff, this has happened to me before, but I'm not sure if it was your post. In this case, the first image shows fine, but the second one has the "?" icon (and I am logged in in case that matters). I'm on a PC right now - I'll check my phone later.

One of the things I like about ebay is that as you watch things, you get a feeling for what the market is for them. Shilling aside, of course :)

I had the same experience with this matchbook, John. Underbid on it a couple of times until I figured out what it went for and finally won one.

You'll get it!

Jeff, great point about eBay - I actually think losing auctions on your first try is a good thing - speaking from experience I've overpaid on some cards here and there :).

Just to follow up, I tried on my phone, your post with the two Dilweg images just displayed one image and a "missing image" icon.

I usually watch an item through a couple of auction cycles before bidding on it just so I don't overpay! Of course if something seems very rare, you often don't have this option as it might not show up again.

Anybody else not seeing some of my posted images? They all show for me but am trying to figure out if my photo image site is working properly or not.

To be honest, I didn't know who Bill Johnson was. I laid eyes on this card and loved it, though. I do talk about that more in my blog post.

I would actually like to get a run of this particular card as well. Vintage cards are so much better looking than modern.

Hmmmm. Interesting. I think Mike is right that its a permissions problem with one or more of my Google Photo albums but still haven't figure out what the difference in this one is yet. I moved the Dilweg to another album that I know works and now it appears. Permissions on the two albums look the same which is puzzling.

In the 1960's thru 80's, the NFL produced a limited number of transparency slides for use in television broadcasts. My source says that they only made one slide of each player each year, and only a couple of copies of each slide. I strive to be a John Hannah "super collector," so I pick these up when I can. Here are the ones I have so far:

Some Frito Lay Patriots cards of John Hannah. First one is from 1976. The 1982 is the only copy ever graded by PSA.

Can anybody help me figure out the year of issue for the bottom ones?

DBesse27 01-24-2017 09:41 AM

No replies, but with a lot of time and effort, I was able to determine the mystery Frito Lay cards were from 1983.

Had a huge Hannah mail day yesterday. First some backstory. Columbia City Collectibles has had a complete Slim Jim box w/ Hannah on eBay for about a year. I never pulled the trigger because I didn't trust myself to be able to separate a high grade disc. Round ones can be tough, so I figured I'd just wait and buy a PSA 8 or 9. However, i finally decided I wanted it and I knew from the past that these boxes came in 6 different flavors/box colors. I've bought a lot from Columbia City over the years, so I emailed the owner and asked him if he had any of the other variations. He had 3 other flavor/color boxes and a 5th in panel form. So of course I bought them all. OK, here are the pics:

This spicy/red box is unused/unglued. Lastly, the panel. This one needs a trim:

Thanks for looking.
