Question on eBay Final Value Fees

I've been an eBay member since 2004, but just learned something new about their policy on charging final value fees earlier this year. When I removed an eBay listing after selling the card to a Net54 member, eBay still charged me the 10% final value fee on the listing, even though the item did not sell on eBay. This might be news to some of you Net54 members also. Take it from me - you can get charged a 10% final value fee after removing your eBay listing, even if your item doesn't sell!

My question is this: Does anyone know if there is a stated reason for removing a listing that does not result in you as the seller incurring those final value fees? I know that stating, "The item is no longer available for sale" will definitely incur those fees, but I am wondering if you still get charged those fees for any of the other reasons on their list. For example, do you pay the fees if your reason for removing the listing is that "There was an error in the listing"?

You must of had a bidder on the item. Right?
Based on what I read as follows:

Exactly; if you cancelled a live auction listing, they'll charge the 10% of the top bid as a penalty, since they figure that you sold it offline. Since you are acting outside the terms and conditions you agreed to when you joined eBay. If you complain, they'll check your messages to see whether or not you made the offsite deal in eBay's message system, and then consider suspending your account.

If it was a Buy-It-Now, there would be no penalty.

What if I have it listed as By It Now instead of an auction? Will I be charged 10% of the BIN price?

Only on a sale. If no sale or if you cancel the item as a BIN, no fees.

I thought you could cancel one auction listing (w/ bids) per year, and not be charged the final value fee. Not sure if that's changed.

Never heard of a grace cancellation but if there isn't one per year there probably should be. I don't think I have ever cancelled an auction (at least in many years, or that I can remember :))
