What We Need Right Now...

After all the depressing graded card threads here is one for ungraded cards. If it doesn't get any traction, I will pack it in and accept that there is nothing for me and the hobby part of baseball cards is gone. This thread is for anyone and everyone who isn't in it for the money, worried about their card's monetary value, or trimming or wrinkles or any of that.

I will happily congratulate anyone who posts here.

My wife got this one for me the other day, surprise, which almost never happens. It fits in nicely with my 1939 Play Ball cards, which are mainly beaters (what I love about them), and he is one of my all-time favorites. This card didn't even get noticed in another thread I posted it to, probably because it isn't graded, isn't rare and didn't cost enough.

No need to be quite so defeatist, Eeyore!

Nice card, and even nicer that your wife picked it up for you.

James,

A sweet Cecil Travis card if you ask me! But I am biased towards Senators too. I need this one for my Senators team sets. I am closing on on my Topps and Bowman runs first and then I will start working backwards to those sets as well.

My thought about the slab things is this. For my PC, I'll by them in the slabs if it is a reasonable cost, but soon after they arrive, they are set free and find a nice home in my binder pages next to their friends!

Cheers,

Butch

Long live ungraded cards! My collection is where slabs go to be cracked open. Here are a few of my pre-war favorites ...

I would rather have my card raw so I can put them in binders !

Great thread, James. Give your wife a hug. Let's all show cards our wives got for us. Mine are attached:

So far these are all incredibly nice cards. Congratulations to all of you!

I really like having my cards so that I can look at them and hold them in my hands. Other than a few that are put away, I do it all the time. My wife can't understand how I can do that over and over, but it never gets old!

This may be my favorite card now. After receiving it in the mail; digesting the back story; I left positive feedback. "I am honored to take care of your Dad's card." It is a hobby of love for me.

Love this card, especially the doodles.

raw cards

I spent about 45 minutes today placing raw 1994 Merlin Calcio soccer cards
into binder sheets. The cards are beautiful and included stars like Dennis
Bergkamp, Paul Gascoigne, franco Baresi, on and on. It was a blast and it
brought back good memories. Trent King

Everything I have is raw, except for a 6-7 cards in my trade bait box.

75% of my vintage cards aren't sleeved. Here's a stack of several hundred raw T cards without plastic in sight, just as they were enjoyed by kids 113 years ago.

Can’t say I’ve ever had a desire to buy graded. Beyond needing something authenticated, having a numerical grade doesn’t make or break a card for me.

Why does this thread make me channel Jackie DeShannon signing a tune by the great Burt Bacharach.

Maybe Spaeth can post a card of Jackie & Burt, if anybody has one he does.

Ha! She went to high school (Batavia, IL) just up the river, a couple of miles from me!

Here's a recent pickup from the 1923-24 Paulins V128-1 set. The vast majority of the ones I have are creased, hole-punched and some are back-stamped. All are raw, though I'll pick up the two HOF RC from the set in graded form when the time comes.

When I think of slabbed vintage cards, I think of cards that came with a slab of gum. Here's some!

I have a feeling grading card company inserts would just not properly showcase this funhouse T206.

Seldom have I sent cards to a TPG and only cards that I intended to sell/trade. While I don't crack graded cards out of their slabs, many/most of my cards are raw, especially those acquired 20 years or more ago. As I work on a master set of Sam Rice's cards, I'm thrilled to have these off-condition cards, especially because they are rare/scarce.

It's not pre-war, but here's a raw card I bought about 25 years ago before slabs were as plentiful as they are now.

Almost all my cards are not graded. I do put them in sleeves and toploaders though.

Here's one that once was a very hot card....

Reminds me of that T206 "Hooker nailed to a stud" card that someone showed here about a hundred years ago.

I am posting the pix from the thread above. Auction is to help out BobbyVCP's best friend who has Parkinson's. I know about Parkinson's because I have it. Great cause and a great card, an autographed 34 Goudey Charley Gehringer. Fits beautifully into this thread. And as Phil says, the best autograph there is.

Here's some low grade raw HOFers. First Marquard is a Miners Extra, the Baker a purple back. Other two are Honest Long Cut blacks. Multiple Cobb's are going to kill me when I get around to them...

Just posted this one on a different thread, but seems like it fits in nicely here as well. Many more cracked cases to go (the Cobbs will be tough 🙂 (and likely the last to be freed))

Hi James,

Don't feel too bad about so many cards being graded these days. There are still tons of raw cards out there and many collectors that want them. I have a mixed collection as I just buy the cards I want regardless of whether they are graded or raw. I don't crack them out if they are graded, but I don't typically search our graded cards.

I also love to hold my cards and prefer them raw so I can feel them and imagine them how they were when a collector held them 100+ years ago.

Here are my T206 and C46 Jersey City team sets that are all raw. I love these.

Contradictorily, sometimes I like my raw cards well-done. And when they are aged to perfection. And with faults that quake more than those in the state of California.

Brian (I also appreciate when my cards have well-rounded personalities, as seen with "Large Charlie")

Here's a 53 set a few cards away from a master (including the Mantle :(), raw and natural.

The 53 Paige is probably my favorite post-war baseball card. I confess to arranging the stacks so he was on top.
