Hypothetical question

Say I had a T202 card that had been cut into three cards (the two ends and the middle). For the sake of argument, say from the cut it's obvious all three were part of the same card originally.

Now say, for display and protection purposes, I wanted to get this card graded (just an authentic grade to keep the card together).

If I send the three pieces to PSA and SGC ... they won't grade this as authentic, correct?

If I put scotch tape on the back ... then both companies will grade it as authentic, correct?

But over time, won't the scotch tape damage the card (at least more so than having no tape would)?

So is there a better way than sticking scotch tape on the back of it to get the grading companies to authenticate a T202 that has been cut into three sections?

Cheers,
Patrick

I think you can buy archival tape.

I'm not sure how grading companies would handle it, but there are a few things you could do.

Most modern stamp hinges won't yellow over time, and are removable. They might block a bit of the back, but with some work might be able to hold it together not blocking the back. I could send you a few since they come in packets of a thousand or so.

A lot of conservation for paper is done with rice paper and starch paste, which is pretty easy to remove. A lot of really old posters get backed with linen and the same sort of paste, but that would block the view of the back. There are a few archival supply places you could get it from.

A mylar sleeve made for an item about that size will hold the pieces pretty securely. You could simply put them in the sleeve in the right order. It's archival, would hold the pieces in the right arrangement and would not involve adding anything. Of course you'd have to buy a packet of the right size for T202s, but that's not such a bad thing.

Of those options, I'd probably go with the mylar sleeve, and not grading it. Unless it's got the big stars on it I don't see much advantage to grading.

Yeah, acid free tape or glue. But I believe you're correct that neither company will encapsulate the three fragments as an authentic card unless they're put back together.

Peter (and others, I'm a slow typer) just beat me to it.

Book binding tape (Document Repair Tape) is acid free and very thin (light), across the back of the card.

You could also try gluing them together. Any basic white glue (Elmers, SoBO). It'll take steady hand. Glue edges, hold card above surface with tooth picks. It's doable.............. good luck

Personally, I wouldn't use tape of any kind. How's that tape going to look in twenty years? Plus, it's really just doing further damage to the card.

In the preservation field, Japanese tissue is often the way to go. Plus it's reversible. That's what we mostly use at my work to do preservation work on old books, ephemera, etc.

Here's an interesting guide (for book repair but still interesting).

No offense meant but using something like Elmer's glue is bad advice and will do more damage than good.

Okay, no scotch tape. Got it!

Steve - I was thinking holder over mylar sleeve though because the guy I bought the card in question from had several others that were only partial cards. Meaning he'd already sold one or two of the other section(s). Makes no sense to me to just get one panel when all three are together. So I was thinking that if holdered, no one has the choice to break the card into three sections and then send it to the four corners of the Earth.

Thanks to all for the suggestions,
Patrick

which card - can u post pics?

If you want to display the card in a holder you could just get a screw down holder, arrange the pieces to look as they should, and screw the top down. Seems like that solves your problem for a few bucks. You can always add a penny sleeve if you are worried about the card sticking to the case ... and don't crank down too hard on the screws.

I like that idea. Thanks Bryan (and all).
