T206 (minus the big four) - need 23 (95.6%)
1969 Topps 4-in-1 - need one (96%)
1973 Topps - need one (99.9%)
1979 Topps - need two (99.7%)
1980 Topps HOF - need three (93.9%)
1982 Topps HOF - need three (96.5%)

Finally, finished off the 1964 Topps set with these last two cards. No real big $$ cards, but it took longer than I had anticipated. And while the general design doesn't really stand out, the photos are nice and clear and there is a good mix of older (Mays, Mantle, Koufax, Aaron, Clemente) and younger (Rose, Yaz, Gaylord, Oliva) stars. Glad to mark this one complete.

Just completed my set of 1963 Topps Peel-Offs. Got my last one, Al Kaline, today.

Took me about 13 months, the last 5 needing just the Kaline. Pretty much excellent condition or better with decent centering. A mix of blank and instruction backs. One graded, Mantle, the rest raw.

Total cost was $675. The shipping was an additional $80. Only 4 duplicates that I sold for about a $3 profit.

With Billy Herman arriving today, my set of 1952 Topps HOFers is now complete, minus one very big omission. If anyone is laying on an extra #311 please feel free to send my way.

Overall Herman brings me to 24/97 on the 52 Highs, which, when complete, will finish the set. Again, if anyone has an extra 311, I’ll trade you all my doubles for it.

What a great looking Yaz card. And Gaylord is a toughie. Whenever I see that card, it looks as though his hand is too big for the glove - can't get his thumb in. Wonder if he just picked up some middle infielder's glove for the photo.

I've just completed my 1970 Kelloggs set. Don Mincher was the last card I needed.

I thought there was some sort of cosmic conspiracy working against me because I had 2 previous Mincher cards lost in the mail. The tracking just stopped and they dropped off the face of the earth. But it was 3rd time likely.

The set iis NM with just a couple that I'll upgrade to NM when I get the chance.

With the arrival of Charlie Silvera yesterday, the 53 Topps set is complete. I’ll be honest, I never liked this set as much as the other early 50s Topps sets but after putting it together I have a new appreciation for the artwork. 52 and 56 are still my favorites but I have a new found appreciation for this set. It was fun to build.

This now puts me at 1952 (lows) to 1956 and 1970 - present day complete in Topps sets. I’m going to take a break from the 50s and tackle some of the 60s next.

Kutcher55 11-19-2022 08:39 AM

I have been grinding pretty hard on a 75 topps mini set. I have it completed and close to a second set as well. The goal has been to get every card in NMT or better and it is tougher than I thought it would be. Even pack fresh minis seem to have issues, most notably Diamond cuts, centering in general, print issues such as fish eyes but also smudging, registration, and color problems. There are also surface challenges with bubbles or the type of veining that must give TPGs fits. Anyway my set is pretty awesome but it still got a ways to go. Not cheap either and high quality mini cards are not easy. I can’t even imagine the top registry guys with their 9s and 10s.

I will say it is fun to buy a huge lot of nice ones and compare them to my existing set to sub out what I can. It leads to a lot of agonizing decisions such as should I take the mint off center card of one that is in great shape with good centering but has a touched corner or two.

ALR-bishop 11-19-2022 10:02 AM

Jason---congrats on your 75 Mini assemblage. When I was building my set years ago it seemed like there was a time when they were very hard to find and then suddenly they were more plentiful for a time. Some find, can't recall ?

Topps apparently was looking at reviving the Minis in 85 but stopped with a partial unreleased set, some with regular 85 backs and some blank backed. Pretty tough to build that 85 set now. I think the 85s are a smidge bigger than the 75s

Kutcher55 11-19-2022 10:45 AM

That’s interesting Al. When I was growing up the Minis were considered tougher than the regular set. I still believe that to be the case but I think you’re right that something happened to make them more accessible. For me there’s no contest in terms of the set I want to have. The 75 minis are so unique and there has to be fewer of them out there because they were regional issues. The pop reports support that as well.

Still there’s no premium over the regular set. In fact last I checked, the Brett full size tended to go for more $. I don’t totally get it although I do know some collectors refuse to collect the minis and want nothing to do with them so there’s that…

ALR-bishop 11-19-2022 12:03 PM

There was a very passionate group of 75 Mini collectors on the PSA forum board at one time. Do not know if they are still active. But there was a long thread there with a lot of good info on the set. Here is a link

https://forums.collectors.com/discus...-thread#latest

G1911 11-19-2022 12:16 PM

I'm building the mini set too, down to only a few cards now. Here in California, they are everywhere. Some of the regions that got this test issue seem have gotten them in vastly different proportions. Can't trip over a dealer box at a show without finding a stack of Mini's in the Bay Area. Makes them pretty cheap to build here because they are available in such huge quantity.

My father collected them in 1975 in the San Francisco area, and reported he knew at the time that they were a regional issue and not so easy to get elsewhere. He got several boxes he kept unopened and says they were easier to find in his city than the regular size cards. Unfortunately, Dad forgot to do the part where he saved all his cards for his future son and he sold them all to purchase a stereo a few years later. Oops. He did keep some 1970 Topps Posters, but when we started to rebuild the 50's-70's sets in ~1999 together, we had to start over from scratch.

Kutcher55 11-19-2022 04:08 PM

That’s amazing that even 47 years later that sort of regionality still exists.

Speaking of 1975s, just completed my 75 O Pee Chee set over the weekend.....that completion gives me the 1975 trifecta: I have completed the regular 75 Topps (all PSA graded), the 75 mini set, and now the 75 OPC set. The mini set is mostly raw and the OPC set is all raw.

How was the opc set? Cards easier to find/hard? 75 was a birth year set for me, so did 2 each reg and mini

If that is your birth year, by all means you need to build this set. I like to build my sets using lots/near sets, so there are not typically many of these out there with the 75s OPCs. However, there appear to be around 6000+ singles alone on ebay, so in that regard, not too tough to find.

The most challenging part of this set, as with most all OPC sets, is to find centered cards. I still have 60-70 cards from this set that I will look to replace due to centering concerns.

I love the Canadian cousins of Topps, one day they should be recognized for being so short printed, I have 78-87 opc sets….so centering sucks but I think they’re so cool…….75 would be fun to do…..so maybe 🤔

Just finished my 1961 Post Cereal set w/ all 19 variations (welcome home, Jim Lemon from Minneapolis). :)

Note: I didn't do "hand cut" and "perforated." I'm not cray cray.

vintagebaseballcardguy 11-24-2022 06:56 AM

While I don't have an exact count at the moment, I am well over halfway complete on my '50 Bowman set in about VG overall, my Jackie is lower grade than that. Last weekend I picked up the second year Campanella and the Newcombe rookie. Those should arrive tomorrow. Just yesterday I found a decent deal on some low numbers and picked up 11 at once. That will help things along. I'm pursuing copyright/no copyright variations as I build this set.

Rows of Legends 11-24-2022 10:59 AM

I’m sure this may have been covered in a separate thread, but what are the principals to follow when starting out building a set.

Buy the best condition cards you can one/two at a time?

Buy partial sets in varying condition?

I’m working on both the 1960 and 1972 topps set so any specific advice related to these collections would be much appreciated.

Happy Thanksgiving [emoji884][emoji884]

Not sure why, but I decided to go back and fill in some of my mid-grade 52T set. I am a little over half way in number of cards, but only 1 of the big 4.

JCRedbird 12-07-2022 07:47 AM

Finishing up a 69 set. Down to about 40 cards but lack Reggie and Mantle. Also got into Salada coins (62). Topps coins never really interested me nor do the 63 Saladas but really like the portraits on the 62's. Probably gonna put together a 1970 Supers set and then figure out if I'm up to another regular Topps issue or not. Been trying to assemble sets since 1955 and down to a few.

ALR-bishop 12-07-2022 07:55 AM

Richard— why 70 versus 71 on Supers ? I like to have a pack with each set but not sure how to tell the difference between 70 and 71 unless you can see a player in the pack.

With the arrival of #6, AL HR Leaders, 1968 is complete. Bob Gibson gets the binder spine slot. 10 favorite cards in the set: Ryan / Koos rookie an obvious choice despite it being a duel player rookie card, which I hate. Seaver and Carew rookie cups are classic. Love that Yaz pose. Gibson looking Gibson-esque. McCarver looking like the epitome of the wholesome 60s ballplayer. Ricketts looking like the epitome of the 60s in those glasses. Etch looking like I don’t know what - maybe someone grandfather playing catcher? Love the blacked out hats on the A’s to block out KC. And B Rob and F Rob on the same card is classic - these duel player cards I do like.

Now to focus on 67 - which I’ve been making great progress on in no small part to many people on Net54.

Harliduck 01-23-2023 08:41 PM

Congrats on 68 Chris!

I like how you have different players in the binder cover. Mine all have Harmon Killebrew, my favorite player...then after 75 I went with Reggie Jackson. I think mixing it up may be more fun...I may rip you off on that...:)

I think you should go the other way. Find some pictures of Killebrew after he retired, as a batting instructor or what-not, and let Jolly Elm create some of his Cards That Never Were for you. You could even get a picture of Harmon from his 1952 high school team. It would be awesome!

I have complete sets of 53 & 54 Topps, and a partial set of 52. But I'm upgrading all of them to only have centered copies of each card, which as you can imagine, is no small task. I'm almost done upgrading my 54s. Maybe a dozen or so left to finish that one. I have about 120 of the 52s dead centered, and about halfway done with upgrading my 53s.

I also have complete sets of 61 & 86 Fleer basketball. The 86 Fleer is all mint or better and all dead centered. My 61 Fleer is complete, with about 5 cards left to upgrade, but that's a super tough set. Some cards effectively never surface dead centered for 61 Fleer basketball.

Also working on a dead centered 52 Topps Look N See set. About 60% complete with that one.

I have several other complete sets and partial sets, but I don't have the bandwidth to work on those until I finish upgrading the ones above, which I'm focusing on first.

That's actually a great idea...I may have to bug ol' Jolly...:) I do have a few Killebrews that are newer cards that emulate certain years. Like I have the 81 and 82 Topps looking Killebrews...those should be on my binders!

I did grab a "card that never was" and printed one up that was posted here on net54 for the 1957's...as they didn't make a Killer card that year (ROBBED of a classic!!)

Nice work Travis...will you move north to the 55s and 56s when your upgrades are complete?

Interesting note on the 1968 Oakland A's with KC blacked out, the Gosger card shows the helmet being blacked out, but not the reflection on the bill of the helmet: https://www.comc.com/Cards/Baseball/...Gosger/1829350

Phil Roof too:https://www.comc.com/Cards/Baseball/...4/Graded/PSA/9

1947-1966 Exhibits Stan Musial "batting" arrived today and it looks like I'm 91% complete with 306 of the 336 cards (according to the Standard Catalog)

Congrats, Sean.
Now onto those pesky 52 highs. :)

Congrats Larry and Sean

Randy- had not noticed that. I wonder if there are other examples. Will have to look back through my set

Wow, that was quick! Didn't you just get started on that? Congratulations!

On the subject, here is one of the 52Ts that, according to our expert panel, is rumored to be difficult to find not O/C. A nicely centered PSA 7 (better than my newly acquired one below) just sold for $3100!!

So be careful, Sean, about what you are getting into!

I just finished my multi-decades long white whale with a complete run of all Hostess panels from 1975-1979. I also have the albums that came out each year as well.

The 1978 Eddie Murray panel was the last one. The prices were totally crazy, but I got one for a good price finally.

Now I just need to finish my master set of Twinkies singles cards. I have all 60 from 1975 and 1976, but there are almost 250 different 1977 cards. I'm looking to get them all on their original size of panel. I just need 14 more to complete that one. Guess that will take another several decades.

1955 Topps Doubleheaders: I always liked this set, but never got serious about collecting it until last years National Convention in Atlantic City. I picked up 19 cards for $150 or $8 each, and I've been adding cards since then. Todays mail brought three more cards (9/10 Porter Kipper) (33/34 Pendleton Conley) (53/54 Herman Amoros) in beautiful condition $20 each but tax $4.78 and aggressive shipping of $9.87 (ouch) pushed up the total. I'm 75% complete with 49 of the 66 cards (and needing most of the stars).

Good lucky Larry. When done check out the panoramic stadium pics when the backs are placed side by side in reverse numerical order

LuckyLarry 02-11-2023 10:29 AM

THX Al, I'd like to see that panoramic stadium picture if you or someone else has one available.

I said backs, I should have said fronts in reverse order. I did it once with my set but it is now all in a binder in numerical order. Someone, maybe Bob, once posted the panorama in a thread in here. Will try to find that
