1951-54 Globe Printing Cards

The measurements for the Globe Printing cards
all say 2 1/4 x 3 3/8 inches.
Is there a possibility of anyother measurements
besides trimming?
I came across a 1952 Dallas Eagles card that
the paper stock and everything else seems to
match the other sets but it is 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches.
Does anyone have any information on this
possibility?

Globe printing

How random that you bring up Globe Printing tonight. I was just (less than 10 minutes ago) looking at a 1953 program from an exhibition game between the NY Giants vs. Indians played in San Jose, CA. The entire back cover is an advertisement for Globe Printing, related to their production of baseball related material. There is also a picture of a Globe Printing display from some sort of professional conference (see pic).

The interior of the program contains what looks like Globe Printing cards (same style/format), for major league players (although they would not be blank backed). They are, however, smaller than the typical Globe printing cards (about 2 x 3). I wonder if your Dallas card may have come out of some sort of program?

All of my San Jose Red Sox Globe Printing cards are 2 1/4 by 3 3/8.

I know all of this doesn't exactly answer your question, but I thought I'd take this chance to add to the little that is out there/known about the association between Globe Printing and baseball. Their association with San Jose minor league baseball dates back to at least 1942, as I have a San Jose Owls program printed by Globe Printing. They seemed to stop producing San Jose baseball programs around 1957, when the team (and apparently many minor league teams) were having a tough time financially.

Bob Lemke wrote a few in depth article's on these in SCD a few decades ago. I may have copies, have to check.

The article that you're referring to can be found in the link below. The original poster asked about size variances and there are plenty. According to Globe's own literature from 1953, their picture cards were 2 1/8 x 3 3/8, however the cards themselves will vary in both dimensions

I just happaned to pick up two San Jose Red Sox Globe cards this week. I also picked up the 1951 SJ Red Sox team picture/card (haven't scanned it yet). Would love to see the San Jose album, if anyone has it.

I've found 4 or 5 references in my vertical files index on these all from 1990 or earlier, I'll try and dig them up and scan them.

It would be great to see anything you have related to the Globe cards and to have this thread as a findable resource for others.

I found this image of a 1952 Dallas Eagles Don Mossi card on google. It differs from many other Globe cards in that it has a white border.

More Globe

One more quick addition. In Bob Lemke's blog, he mentioned that Globe became involved with baseball in 1949, with the publication of the "Your California League" program/guide. He says that the team pictures look like later Globe cards, with the name in a white box. That is not exactly correct. The team player photos do look like later Globe cards, but with no names (see the San Jose team below). The back cover does, however, have photos of California League players who had gone on to the majors. Those photos look more like Globe cards, although their captions include team names (which, in my experience, Globe cards do not).
