Really nice article. I'd love to see this collection in person.

Almost makes me want to leave the Island to go see it..........almost.

I'll go down and see it at some point and write a review when I return.

I enjoyed the article by Dan Barry; his youthful, religious love of baseball strikes a chord within me.

Maybe I'll let my wife drag me to the Met this summer.
But why only 600 cards?

MVSNYC 07-12-2013 06:54 AM

I'll check out the exhibit soon. i've seen many of his cards there before. there is one particular wall in the American wing where they display some of the Burdick collection (the larger balance is tucked away in the museum). they rotate cards often, with each exhibit having a different theme. i hope this exhibit will have a larger wall in a different area...that would make it feel fresh and more special.

The article has a small mistake- Dan Barry wrote Christy Mathewson would rather play chess than carouse, but Matty of course was a great checkers player. Don't know if he even played chess.

I was there maybe 15 years ago. They let you see the stuff tucked away in the back if you make an appointment.

lol. Teams would hire people to try to coax him into bars for all night checker games the night before he was scheduled to pitch.

the article says

Burdick spent a lot of time mounting his cards. Are any of the cards loose, or are they all glued onto pages?

As memory serves, some are hinged. Hate to say this, but I remember the Goudeys had a thin layer of adhesive tape holding them in their album. Collectors frown on adhesive tape these days.:(

As far as making an appointment, it can be difficult. You need a reason they deem worthwhile- say writing an article or a book- to get an appointment.

Wasn't like that when I went. I was there, asked someone about the cards, they said I can view them with an appointment which I made for the following week. But that was at least 15 years ago I guess maybe their policy has changed.

I remember them being in holders but I could be wrong. They took me in a back room and piled boxes on a large wooden table. When I was done with the boxes, they took them away and bought out more boxes. There were a few other people in the room viewing textiles and other stuff. I do remember the Honus card being in a large almost 8x10 picture frame. I thought this was an odd way to store Honus. Such a HUGE holder for such a small card but then again, I guess Honus is worthy of the biggest holder lol.

WOW how time flies. I am just doing the math in my head, 15 years ago would have been 1998. I was there to view there card collection 20 maybe even 25 years ago not 15 years ago. I am sure policies have changes like Barry stated :(

The last time I went was around 1996 or 1997, but afterwards I wrote an article for VCBC, along with Jay Miller who joined me, about the collection. I know it's changed over the years due to the large number of people who have asked to see it. Back in the 1980's, when I first went, an appointment was just a formality.
