1967 Topps Discs question
2 Attachment(s)
Are there 2 versions of these. I thought one of these might be a proof but the Standard Catalog says they only exist in proof form.

There were two separate proof groups of the Discs in 67, one of All Stars and one of only SF Giants. While they were never issued at retail ( I don't think even on a limited test basis), the proofs for each player can be found in different degrees on completeness. I ended up with an unfinished proof sheet. I think Howard siad he won the 68 sheet that was recently auctioned

Thanks Al, I had a feeling you would know :)

The only difference, in regard to versions, I have seen on the ‘68’s is that some have the silver foil and some have the plain white stock. I’m unsure if collectors would consider these variations, but they are definitely different. |

I have a Gene Alley proof from 1968 that is on a white background, not silver. I would think that is possible in 1967 as well.

Don't think so

Howard is right.

As for addressing the original question, Mark hit the nail on the head. I believe the original 2 pictures are the same. They both are silver foil. The pictures are shot with different lighting and at a different angle.

I have seen some of those creased 68's as well over the years. With proofs it's sometimes a matter of what part of the process survived or who purloined it.
The 68's are much more difficult than the 67's and IMO it's not close. |

I'm a little confused...
Is this "black/magenta ink" pic (pulled from google) an example of discs that would eventually be full color after more ink was applied? |
67s
Those are from the giants disc set
Missing all the colors |

They look kinda cool too and there not really cards, but discs. Are you going to start collecting these type of Giants items?!? |
.
They are missing blue and yellow.

So.....is the consensus that these primarily magenta hued are one issue and the full color are another? i.e. the magenta did not "progress" (through some printing process) to full color? |

Sort of. Progressive proofs are done to check that the color is right, and lines up with the other color. With CMYK, you sometimes get all the possible combinations, sometimes only certain ones. These are just Magenta and black It also allows them to check for problems with each design. Like on the Perry, his name sort of gets buried in how dark his collar is. It's not too bad on the full color version so probably not something they'd fix. But this is the stage to find that stuff and fix it if it doesn't work. |
