1965 Topps - What is Your Favorite Card?
 

There were many great sets in the 1960's, and for me, the '65 set is my favorite barely edging out the 1963 set.

That being said, what is your favorite card(s) from the '65 set?

Mine is Tony Oliva. I love the colors of the card and I am a HUGE fan of the big All-Star Rookie Trophy's on cards, whether they are stars or commons.

Although it's very similar to his 1964 card (and obviously taken during the same photoshoot), I just adore this gesticulating Casey Stengel, holding court on the dugout steps.

Willie Mays is my all-time favorite and this MVP-year card portrays such great intensity. Love it!!

Per Wikipedia: "He is notable for being the first Japanese player ever to play for a Major League team. Sent over to the United States by the Nankai Hawks, Murakami saw success as a reliever for the Giants, debuting at the age of 20 in 1964. In 1965, he struck out over one batter per inning pitched, posted an ERA under 4 and earned eight saves. Following this season, however, Murakami headed back to his original Japanese club due to contractual obligations, where he continued his success for another 17 years. ... on September 1, 1964, he became the first Japanese player to play in the major leagues. Murakami pitched extremely well as a reliever, and because of it, the Giants refused the Hawks' order to return him to Japan. The argument escalated during the 1964 off-season, and the Japanese baseball commissioner was called in to make the final decision on which team Murakami would play with. The commissioner made a compromise; Murakami would return to the Hawks after he had played for another full season with the Giants. He wore number 10 with the San Francisco Giants."

Piersall -- Fear Srikes Out

That was early on in his major league career, way before the '65 Anaheim Angels. I met his son -- well, at least one of them, I don't know how many he had --- in passing, when I lived in CA. The son was great and unassuming. There was a film about him, Sr., not Jr.:

I like the Mays card a lot. His teammate is runner up to Oliva as a favorite card in the set for me.

1965 Topps is my favorite year from that decade. I'm building a set on the SGC registry, all 8 or better. My set averages about an 8.5. I'm currently #2 on the registry, but I'm really not doing it to be competitive, just for fun.

Spahn as a Met looks so...wrong.

I'd say the Clemente is my favorite card from the set. I don't own it yet, but I will.

Gotta agree with Bill on the Clemente.I also always liked the Aaron,also.

I agree this is a classic beautiful set. The Sandy Koufax card is simply great as well.

I would have to go with Yastrzemski also...and I'm a Yankees fan. The Spahn is great too. I had him sign a Mets helmet like 20 years ago and he asked me why the Mets?
Now that I'm older, I see why.

The Koufax is the best card in the set. The others posted are all great too, this is my favorite Topps set by far. The photos are amazing.

The Brooksie card is my favorite...

Hank Aaron and Bob Gibson are my favorite cards of this set. Besides being two star cards, I think the colors they used for the Braves and Cardinal cards look great.

My favorite Lou Brock card is the 1965 Topps. Great colors, great card.

Erik, I'm so glad you asked about the '65 set, because it gives me a chance to talk about my favorite postwar set. I'm going to go beyond your topic.

The '65s were my first cards. I was eight years old back then. I recently finished my '65 set. All of them are PSA 9s:

My favorite card was Yastrzemski. The way he was posed making a catch just seemed so cool;

I grew up in Chicago as a Cubs fan, and I loved the Santo and Williams cards' but I hated the big head Ernie Banks. He looks like a baloon in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade;

I'm disappointed by the rookie cards. The most valuable Morgan, Pezez, Carlton and Hunter are shared with Fritz Ackley and Sonny Jackson. I hate that multi-player format;

One final thought: back then whenever we opened a pack, the cards we hoped for were Mays, Mantle, or Koufax. The guys who are famous now like Rose, Clemente and Aaron were popular, but not close to Willie and Mick. And for some reason, every other pack seemed to contain Gary Bell. I think I had about 15 of him back then.
