Posted By: Bryan
Normally I wouldn't post a bad reprint being sold but this is bad in so many ways.

http://cgi.ebay.com/1909-T206-TY-COBB-Green-Back-Portrait-TOLSTOI-CARD_W0QQitemZ8707196140QQcategoryZ86841QQrdZ1QQcm dZViewItem

Seller states, "THIS IS A 1909 T206 TY COBB GREEN BACK TOLSTOI CARD. WE HAVE NOT HAD IT GRADED BUT ARE SELLING IT AS AN AUTHENTIC CARD. WE WILL NOT GIVE ANY REFUNDS ON THE CARD."

On top of that the seller is using two IDs to shill bid the card, 18 bids from speedracerx73 (a new ebay member) and 2 bids from brb320.

I couldn't resist reporting this one to ebay.

Posted By: Keith
Not only is he a selling a reprint, but he is extremely greedy in doing it. His 20 something shill bids is crazy, and eventually got too greedy and went above the high bidders bid.

Posted By: Bryan
anyways, ebay has yet to remove the listing. Never reported a bad listing before so I don't know how long the process takes.

I guess if they don't remove the listing then the guy will have to pay ebays fee.

Posted By: Brian E
Bryan:

For what reason did you report the Cobb card? What specific ebay policy did the listing violate?

I ask because I frequently report bogus Cobb listings IF they violate a specific ebay policy. Otherwise they will not remove the listing.

First, is an authenticity disclaimer used? This would violate an ebay policy. This listing does not have an authenticity disclaimer. Quite the contrary, the seller states the card is authentic. We know it's not, but the seller doesn't state "I don't know if it is authentic or not" or "as is", rather they state is is authentic.

Second, is shill bidding involved? I would say yes, but when you look at the bidding and selling history of the individuals involved, it isn't transparent.

So my final comment is, after watching bogus Cobb auctions over the past six months, reporting them and seeing what stays listed and what gets booted, I personally think Ebay will let this listing ride.

Brian E.

Posted By: Anson
"very good condition, not a lot of wear"

As a clear reprint, it probably DID come with the rounded corners and toning. Therefore, it wouldn't have a lot of wear.

Posted By: Bryan
I reported the listing as two violations, 1) fraudulently selling a reprint as an authentic and 2) obvious shill bidding.

I have never reported a listing before so I don't know what ebay needs to remove a listing. I was just banking on the ebay folks knowing shill bidding when they see it.

I have gotten to the point where I am numb to the "it hasn't been graded by a third party therefore I am selling it as a reprint." Hey, if you are stupid enough to think it is real after reading that disclaimer then you deserve what you are about to get. However this guy really got me by claiming it is authentic and won't give you a refund.

Posted By: Brian E
Bryan:

It would be great if Ebay cancelled the auction. Like you, I've grown just about numb to it. But I also think I've learned what Ebay will or will not pull in terms of violating their TOS. If I think Ebay would pull it, I report it. If not, I'm left with the attitude of buyer beware. If I'm in bad mood and feel like pursuing it further, I use the approach below:

I've found it moderately effective to send a message to the seller mentioning the following two websites: 1) FBI Internet Fraud Complaint Center http://www.ifccfbi.gov/index.asp 2) USPS mail fraud complaint form http://www.usps.com/postalinspectors/fraud/MailFraudComplaint.htm

Best of luck

Brian E.

Posted By: Bryan
Good to know. Thanks for the info Brian.

Against my better judgement I sent the seller a message asking about the cards authenticity. I will post the response if it is of any interest. After all, some of the things these scammers come up with is worth a laugh or two.

Bryan
