Crazy how many jerseys a player wears in a year.

Joakim Soria x10

Nate very cool pickups, do the Rangers have any equipment left?:p

Runscott 11-08-2014 11:06 AM

Nate, please post pics when you get the quilt sewn.

Thank you, Mike.

Scott, that's funny. And I know, this was pretty bad of me to get all these. Couldn't stop myself.

Rockford Peaches

Was lucky enough to win this almost mint Rockford Peaches pennant…no bends/holes/tears… which later lead to finding 3 original programs as well as several playoff programs and finally a 1947 team signed photograph for my collection.

Tigers banner is stunning! Congrats.

I don't usually buy tintypes, but I loved this image. The condition is so nice that I had doubts about it being real, but I've been told independently by a tintype expert, and a photo expert, that it almost certainly is.

Tigerden 11-10-2014 09:11 AM

Nate - Very good pick up on the Soria jersey's. It is amazing how many different jerseys some teams have today over the course of the year with third jerseys and Negro League jerseys. I must say you couldn't give those away in my home city of Detroit after his performance in the Playoffs this year!

Finally got around to posting this Cavetown, MD. cabinet card I picked up last month, while visiting the antique stores in Adamstown, PA. I passed on this at first due to price, but couldn't get the sharp image and great contrast out of my mind. I ended up calling the store back a few days later to have it shipped.

Ha, no kidding. But I've always been a Royals fan, so it was tough to pass up. He was pretty popular in KC.

But you're right. He didn't do too well when he got traded to Det.

Matt, I love to hear people say they are buying a photo because it's a good photograph. This one is definitely deserving of paying a premium.

I’m pretty excited to add this early 70’s original Clemente 8X10 to my collection. It has the photographers stamp on the reverse. It appears to be from the same photo shoot that generated the image used for the Rawlings Advisory Staff Member photo. Prior to this one arriving today I did not have an attractive original photo of him in the uniform of my ’71 Bucs. Every time a nice one comes up for auction I am a chronic under bidder. The eBay scans did not do it justice so I gambled and made an offer. I got it very cheaply:D

John V 11-11-2014 04:26 AM

It's pretty rare to see Roberto in uniform without long sleeves.

ksfarmboy 11-11-2014 07:41 AM

Mike notice the stripes on the sleeves are reversed. The manufacturer made a mistake on that batch of jerseys. I've seen a couple of these jerseys. Cool photo.

Tigerden 11-11-2014 08:38 AM

Great Clemente pick-up Mike. You should be thrilled to add that to your Bucs collection.

71buc 11-11-2014 08:53 AM

John, Clint, and Adam, thanks for the nice comments. I didn't even notice the reversal of the stripes or consider that he was sleeveless. I was very happy to add it to my collection at a price that didn't dampen my enthusiasm. This is why I prefer memorabilia over cards. There are still the occasional trinkets available to be found by the diligent collector on a budget:o

A new endeavor for me. I don't have any experience with them but I liked this one. Has a little paint on it I was thinking about removing. Not sure how to do that if it is wise. And I don't know if the bat has value but I like it.

If it is just little spots, you can flick them off with an x-acto knife (or carpet cutter). You can also rub just the spot, lightly, with the blade, and it will take off a little dust at a time. The next step after that would be to clean it and then seal it. If you think it looks unattractive as-is, and it's value isn't high (I don't know), then you can certainly restore it somewhat, very easily.

John V 11-13-2014 03:11 PM

Jon,
I had my eye on that bat also. Can you tell if it is cracked?
The paint splatters should come off if you rub them with denatured alchohol.

It is not cracked. I'm gonna try the denatured alcohol and the exacto knife idea from earlier.

Alcohol is always a good first choice, but if that doesn't work, paint thinner should. The alcohol will dry out the wood even more, and may leave spots (as might the thinner). Once I have gone that far with a piece of wood, I usually take the next steps (each is optional):
  1. clean the entire bat (other than wrapped part) with alcohol
  2. glue separated parts (checks, etc) with wood glue, clamp with plastic ties.
  3. light sanding
  4. clean with liberal use of alcohol
  5. seal with wood sealer or Danish oil - choose color carefully, practice on something before applying

Thanks for the tips. Like I said this is a first for me so this will be a great help.

Jon and Scott I am obviously biased but I think those are great pick-ups;) Jon, do you have the black version of that pennant? I seem to recall that the white one can be had with either Virdon or Murtaugh listed as manager. Scott, I'm looking forward to seeing that book in person. However, I wish you would limit yourself to collecting Astros memorabilia. In sticking with the Pirate theme. I picked up my 14th 1971 Bucs stub today. On this date 14,845 witnessed Luke Walker out duel Bob Gibson as the Pirates clinched the 1971 NL East title.

Runscott 11-14-2014 09:09 PM

It's tough being a fan of a non-vintage team - I have to invade other people's territory sometimes.

Thanks Mike. I do not have the black version of the pennant. I would like one at some point. I believe the one I have was purchased at the same time as the program was during the series since I purchased them together from the same guy.

Cleveland Indians season passes

Three different Cleveland Indians season passes, including World Championship season of 1920, issued to Mrs Guy Morton. Guy Morton pitched for the Indians from 1914 - 1924.

Assuming that the pass was also valid for the World Series, and that as the wife of one of the players, she would have attended, the 1920 pass was likely used to witness Bill Wambsgnass' unassisted triple play in Game 5.

Interesting personal notations on the back of the 1924 pass show some income and expenses, such as 75 for Rent and 20 for Car.

1957 World Series Batting Foes

Picked up this vintage 7 x 9 image of Mickey Mantle and Hank Aaron at Yankee Stadium during the 1957 World Series.
This image was used for the 1958 Topps card number 418 - "World Series Batting Foes"
Although I am a Yankees fan, Hank Aaron was my favorite player as a teenager in the late 1960's - early 1970's as I rooted for him to become the all-time Home Run King.
The International News Photos stamp on the back didn't come out well in the scan, but it is the one used from 1949 - 1957, according to "A Portrait of Baseball Photography"

Not the best pic as it was taken with my phone. Uniform was originally listed as a "road uniform". The style and pinstripes clearly made it a home version and I knew that when I bought it. The garment was fairly evenly toned and soiled. This pic is post conservation cleaning.
