Looking for 9/15/84 Chicago Tribune Photo

A good friend of mine was the Cubs batboy for a day on 9/14/84 at Wrigley. He was in the background of a Jody Davis photo on the cover of the Chicago Tribune the next day. He is currently recovering from an accident and I would love to be able to purchase a copy of that picture for him. If anyone can help, please let me know. Thanks.

That is a very nice thing to do for your friend while he recovers. I wish you the best of luck in your search.

Could this be it? I see a bat boy in the background. There is a video of the grand slam on YouTube but ends before he reaches the dugout.

The newspaper may have an archive department that might be able to help you.

Thank you!!!!!!

This forum is simply amazing. Bob - that's him! He is currently laid up in the first few weeks of a lengthy and painful recovery. He had never seen that photo before, or the YouTube clip, and he was absolutely ecstatic. I spoke with him for an hour today and seeing those images and reliving that day was the greatest therapy he could have. I can't thank you enough.

The picture I was originally searching for from the Trib was taken from a distance and my friend is just a small image behind Jody Davis. But the UPI photo you posted is much better. He said sharing that picture and the video with his two sons (diehard baseball fans of course) today was a moment that he'll remember for a long time.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to reply. You have no idea how much I appreciate it.

Is that him in the background on the bottom?

Yes again! The Tribune photo was in color and was taken from the same angle but just as Davis was ready to swing. This one is almost the exact same image but a second later. My friend's family has the newspaper, and the memories, but not these photos. Thanks so much for sharing. Needless to say if originals or copies are available I would be interested in a purchase or trade.

The batboy-for-a-day job was a gift from his grandfather who bought it during a preseason charity auction for his baseball crazed grandson. My friend was 10 at the time and little did anyone know the Cubs would be in 1st place in mid-September and playing for the pennant before a sold out madhouse. Richie Hebner was particularly gracious and gave him a signed bat and a team signed ball.
