June Pickups

Wow. A week in and no pickup thread. You guys gotta start spending more!

Love this Rosey Rosewell. Pirates broadcaster from 1936 until his death just before the 1955 season. Tough autograph but on an 8x10? Made out to my name?

Had to do it.

#252 Nothing too special, have been avoiding since the autograph is quite common. I think I now have claim as being the only person to have autographs from all HOFers ever to wear a Detroit Tigers Uniform, which is cool for a Detroit Tigers collector.

"Toothpick" Sam Jones signed Fan Club membership card

2 Attachment(s)
From the newly semi-retired Jim Stinson's last sale list, I just picked up this "Toothpick" Sam Jones vintage signed Fan Club membership card.
Congrats again, Jim! You will be missed. ;)

On May 12, 1955 Cubs hurler and ex-negro league player Toothpick Sam became the first African American to pitch a no-hitter in the ML. On September 26, 1959 while pitching for the SF Giants he followed it up with a rain shortened unofficial 7 inning no-hitter against the St. Louis Cards.

This fan club membership card is exceedingly rare to begin with, but it also is cool because he was a tough signer and passed away very young (age 45) of cancer. The fact that this card mentions his no-hitters made it a no-brainer pickup for my no-hit collection.

COOL FOLLOW UP NOTE: Dwight Chaplin, the original Sam Jones Fan Club membership card owner just reached out to me by e-mail. He is actually one of us on net54 & spotted my post. Small world!

Taz, I am super jealous as I am a big Tigers fan too. I am close, but have accepted the fact that I will never get Thompson or Jennings. I've got everyone else, but I think those two will probably never fit in the budget.

Taz, does that mean you have a Sam Thompson autograph too ?
I would assume that his 1906 appearance in a game in a Detroit uniform
would constitute his being among the Detroit Tigers (as well as ex-Wolverine).

I purchased one years ago (plus Dan Brouthers) in a 1990's mail bid auction, only to find out later both were forgeries. Early, painful lessons learned.

I thought the same thing a year ago, both from a financial POV and the fact that I had never seen a Thompson outside of the Halper catalog. Things just lined up nicely. Based on conversations, there appear to be at least 3 other
"legit" Sam Thompson autographs in private collections they may hit the market one day.

WOW !!! Love it when things actually line up in a collectors favor. Congrats.

Yes, picked up in February, this is about as legit as it gets-even if first name only

Great stuff everyone! Eddie Collins sure had a beautiful signature!

This is a pickup in the sense that I finally got around to building it after buying the cut in February.
Just hope to find a way to keep it. A non-sport white whale showed up recently. May be forced to sell this to pay the whale off.

Did you finally land a 77 Obi Wan signed card?

Yes, yes I did. Beat as hell, but I wanted any card, but this was #2 preferred card.

I was planning on chopping the picture, but I decided to list it on eBay to save it as a nice piece to frame and it sold quickly. So i used that money and bought this cut, which was already trimmed to just bigger than what you see there.

And thanks for the comment.

Love that centennial Vance Taz. Finally added an Evers to the collection.

nicker10 06-17-2017 09:32 PM

Was pretty pumped to add this to my collection for only $100 from eBay. Not the boldest of examples but for $100 I have no complaints. Came with the concert ticket from when it was signed.

Walter Johnson Joe Jackson

Being a fan of Walter Johnson and an avid Joe Jackson/Black Sox collector, this auto with "the best hitter I ever saw" Jackson reference was a must have. Thanks to a fellow board member, Tom C, was able to work out a nice trade and add this to my collection. Items and transactions like this is what makes Net 54 so special.

Very nice. Don't apologize for non-sports. Although the forum is primarily sports, it is not exclusively sports.

Most of the neatest pieces I've seen people post over the years here are non-sports IMHO.

Earl Hamilton twice signed 1920's photo

June continues to be a really good one for me for pickups.
I just picked up this circa 1920's snapshot size photo of early no-hit pitcher Earl Hamilton that is signed both on the front as well as the back.
Hamilton's signature is indeed scarce, but finding a signed photo is next to impossible...

On August 30th, 1912 diminutive St. Louis Browns hurler Earl Hamilton became the 1st to ever throw a no-hitter with no strikeouts. The only two pitchers to ever accomplish this feat were "Toothpick" Sam Jones in 1955 and Ken Holtzman in 1971.
Earl Hamilton no-hit the Ty Cobb led Detroit Tigers 5-1 at Detroit's inaugural season at Navin Field.

Nice pickup Scott! So nice to see great penmanship from a bygone era. Today's player scrawls are almost painful to look at.

No-hit pitcher Walter Thornton signed card

Info deleted because signature is not that of the pitcher Walter Thornton.
Oh well, the search continues... :(

I was able to scratch yet another real toughee off my early no-hit pitcher want list: Walter Thornton. Although he lived to 1960, Thornton was definitely "off-the-grid" for many of his later years and his signature is not available.

This is incredible, do you have Addie Joss? On a related note, sister was in Lexington, KY and her Uber driver turned out to be Joe Cowley.

Hi Taz,
I do not have Addie & he's not on my list because of scarcity, $$$$ and difficulty authenticating.

Joe Cowley the Uber driver, I love it. :D
Did you know that Joe Cowley never won another game after pitching his no-hitter? Crazy!

mbrummer710 06-28-2017 03:59 PM

On tigers autos...I haven't gone the uniform route. I have gone the ones recognized by the HOF. But Jennings is impossible. It's super odd, he was a lawyer, you figure there would be a pile of auto's somewhere.

He now is recognized as a Oriole despite the cap by the HOF

Picked this up today. Probably a game used ball from Spring Training. It looks like Casey wrote "Future Sarasota Hit from Casey Stengel" on it.

Finally picked up a new bat case for my 40th anniversary 1960 Pirates bat, as well as a single signed Mazeroski ball in the same case. Here's a poor picture of it after I put it up on the wall today.

Cooptown 06-30-2017 02:50 PM

That's a beautiful display case for your bat! Can I ask where you got it?

mr2686 06-30-2017 07:01 PM

I actually got it on Amazon. I had attempted to get another case that had 3 sides of UV "glass", but it kept being delivered damaged. I finally chose this one because it matches my ball cases. Has a lock on it and looks quite nice in person.
