May Pick Ups

1 Attachment(s)
Let me start off May with one of the two hardest 1969 Cubs, Coach Verlon "Rube" Walker. Not to be confused with his older brother Rube (Albert) Walker of the 1955 Dodgers. I'm going to mat this anyway, so the cut attached to a magazine page doesn't bother me, and allowed me to get this at a fantastic price. I had missed out on two others over the years, and almost pulled the trigger on one other before this one came up. Interesting fact that I was unaware of, as Verlon was coaching the 69 Cubs and watching them go down in flames, his brother Albert was coaching the Miracle Mets and watching them pass the Cubs and go all the way.
The rest of the Cubs that I need are fairly easy, so it should be smooth sailing.

Didn't have a Dean, thought this vintage ball was pretty cool and fairly cheap.

mr2686 05-03-2018 07:00 AM

Nice Dean pickup. Hey, is that Paul Dean on there as well?

mr2686 05-03-2018 07:00 AM

Thanks Mark. I'm hopefully going to put 2 projects to bed this year...ok, maybe early next year. LOL

Nice pick up.....

Wasn't sure if you were aware of the website that Vernon Walker's daughter started about her father....

Thanks for the info Bill. I didn't know about the website but will check it out. I love to find out info on the people I collect...especially the hard to find ones.

Not sure if I am going to hold onto this one or not. First one I have ever seen signed from this set.

Won this lot of pictures from the Heritage Auction tonight. Pretty surprised at how cheap it went.

21 signed pictures from the 1931 US Tour of Japan...

Frank O'Doul and Lefty Grove with two Japanese officials, Bruce Cunningham, (2) Mickey Cochrane, (5) Lefty Grove (two with Japanese players) , Beans Reardon, (2) Al Simmons, George L. Kelly, Tom Oliver/Cunningham, O'Doul, Rabbit Maranville, Ralph Shriver, Herb Hunter with Japanese player, Hunter alone in dugout, one with two US members with a Japanese player and three Japanese officials.

Awesome pick up Jeff! There were some steals in the Heritage auction...

Tom I have one too. Sig darker but your signature looks more vintage. Nice pick up

I was mostly following the 1931 Japan items, but I was very surprised by some of the ending prices. I'm sure other items sold really strong, but the ones I saw were pretty low. I would have loved to have won the 1931 signed baseballs (US and Japanese teams) which I think were a great deal.

I had my eye on those as well. What I love about them is the unique nature of the photos combined with the vintage signatures. A Lefty Grove signed smaller sized photo is nice but usually nothing special. A vintage signed Lefty Grove snapshot, however....different story. And that there are five of those plus the rest of what is there. Wonderful stuff and a great pickup.

I’ve come to expect that we are probably eyeing the same auctions 😆.

I really don’t know what the individual cards are worth but they seemed insanely cool. Gives me something really cool to research.

For 30 bucks I couldn't resist. Nice shot of Piazza at his first spring training:

Nice early Piazza! And for $30, what a steal! He looks like he is about ready to punch whoever is taking the photo

egri 05-19-2018 08:30 AM

Can't get the photo to load, but I made my first pickup for my project in over a year, #68 Del Rice, and from a fellow board member. Thank you to Fluterofd for a successful trade!

Needed another signed magazine to balance out my Pirates wall. Always loved this magazine, and when I found out that Mazeroski was having a private signing last week, I decided to send it in. Just came back, and I must say that Maz's sig is still looking great.

Those signed Tour photos are amazing, can't believe how cheap they went too. Glad you got them Jeff!

Thanks! I was watching it thinking, "that's a cool lot I'm curious to see what it will go for" and then switched gears to bidding when I saw the price.

Nice! Mattingly really is a great guy. He signed a Topps rookie for me at spring training last year.
