Mathewson Football Pic?

I know Connie mack created one of the 1st Pro football teams in Philly, and Mathewson was on the squad ( i think it lasted 1-2 years )

anyone ever seen a vintage photo?

Once had a team cabinet photo in the early 80's, Mathewson and the whole team were in uniforms, and Mack was in the photo. Believe it is still in the advanced Mathewson collector's possession, that I traded it to.

Mathewson played fullback and punter for the Pittsburg team, so he would not have been in a team photo with Connie Mack.

Here are the 1902 (football) Athletics, with Mack but no Mathewson:

My recollection was Mack was in the photo, I also do not remember letters on the uniform, i thought they were blank, but looked to be black or vey dark.

I don't know of any pictures of Big Six as a pro footballer but would love to see one if such exists. Here's a scan from the 1902 Bucknell yearbook of the 1900 varsity squad, Matty at back near center.

I bought a copy off eBay a few years ago. The book sat at a dollar or two until the last ten seconds when me and two other guys who were in the know put in fat snipes. It's a real treat to peruse its pages, a walk in the past. Matty was a Forestry major. Who knew?
This postcard from around 1905 is of Loomis Field where games were played until Christy Mathewson Field was built in the twenties on the other side of the campus. I visited Bucknell and Matty's gravesite after the last Baltimore National. As beautiful of a college campus as I've ever seen.

That guy in the second row all the way to the left in that Bucknell photo is a MONSTER. Anyone have a name?

In the yearbook they don't list the names under the picture, but on the previous page they have the roster. My guess is he is a tackle or the center.

Mathewson was also on the 1899 squad. I think he is top row third from the right.

3rd from the right is correct, Joe.

Found him. That monster was the substitute center on the 1900 team and became Captain of the 1902 team. W.S. Wilcox.

Mathewson

Here is an image of the 1902 Pittsburgh Pros football team (with Christy Mathewson included) that competed against Connie Mack's A's football team. The image is from the book: Illustrated History of Pro Football.

Whoa! Is the player in the middle of the photo an African-American?? If so, that is REALLY interesting considering several of the football players that were on these teams were actually baseball players from the segregated Major League.

Rob, the player you are looking at is Native American. There were several prominent Native American football players in pro football at that time, including Bemus Pierce (a former Carlisle Indian star player). I am not sure who the player on Pittsburgh was, but Bemus played for Connie Mack's team.
