Most Popular Topps Set from the 1960s

Hi, I am mainly a baseball card set collector, but I do collect some Topps Football from the 1960s.

There may have been a past thread(s) on this topic, so someone may want to point in that direction.

Or if not, I am interested in what folks think is the most overall popular set. I know the 1965 Topps Tall Boy Set featuring the AFL players is a standout and may rank as the most popular set from the 60s. In fact, I have a complete graded set from that year.

I am interested in starting another set from that decade. Besides 1965, what other Topps set would folks suggest (in terms of design, player selection, and overall appeal)?

The 1962 Topps ... to me it's one of the nicest but super tough with those Black boarders. Has some great cards like Ernie Davis, and Ditka.

Yea, it seems folks either love or hate the 1962 set.

Good point; in deed it is. I always kinda like the look of the 67 set as well with those colorful boarders.

65 is the best looking and coolest by far, but even with the Namath rookie the player selection is just lacking due to AFL only. My favorite is 63 -- some great rookies (Lilly Nitschke Jones) plus the usual greats.

1963 & 1965 best of each league

1962 and 1965

I completed the 1962 and 1965 sets. Both in NM (PSA 7). Condition. The 1962 set was far and away the hardest to put together in that grade, due to the black borders, but worth it to me.

I prefer the early 60s, specifically 1957.

While I like the 62s the best personally, in my ebay store the 69s followed by the 68s sell the quickest.

1968 is the best one. It has the first unified AFL-NFL issue and all of the Packers and Raiders are on special designed cards as the champs. My absolutely favorite set.

1968 topps ARE pretty cool. I didn't realize that and the special cards for packers and raiders

Why are some backs blue and some green?

Green backs are first series, blue backs are second series. I've been working on the set for a while - have 140+ or so... really nice set.

1968 Topps is a great set. But the first unified NFL and AFL sets were from 1961 when both Topps and Fleer featured players from both leagues.

1969 Topps is my favorite 60s football set, followed by 61 Fleer. The Philadelphia sets are all great and 1962 Post is rapidly becoming a favorite of mine.

1960 topps football love it

It’s 1962 Topps for me also. The challenge of completing a black bordered set, and the three key rookies, Ditka, Davis and Tarkenton, make it the best of the decade.

JTysver 04-25-2019 08:16 AM

1962 for me as well

Chicosbailbonds 04-26-2019 02:05 PM

1962 followed by 1960. If it doesn't have to be topps, look at the 1961 Fleer set. A nice mix of NFL and AFL with logos on the cards.

I have 57-60 and 62-66 topps plus 62 post and 65 66 phil.

Outside of the 65 topps, I'd go:

1) 62 topps
2) 62 post
3) 66 Philadelphia.

I recommend 1969. The player selection is excellent. You get the AFL and NFL together. What's a 1960s set without Joe Willie?

The colors pop and I think it has great eye appeal.

The first series has no borders which actually helps per centering issues.
