E107 Eddie Plank question

2 Attachment(s)
I purchased an E107 Breisch-Williams Eddie Plank card about 30 years ago and have it in a raw state right now. The card's major flaw is a fleck of paper loss on the front where the P for pitcher should be. There are some other issues, as well, but overall, its a pretty good card for an E107 and its a Plank with the photo used for his T206 card and others.

Questions for the folks here: If I were to send this card into PSA or SGC, what do you think the grade would be; and any idea, depending on your grade guess, what the value would be? Unless I'm missing something, I don't think PSA has graded a E107 Plank previously.

barrysloate 12-27-2018 06:06 PM

I would guess 1.5 Fair, and a 2 is not impossible. Great card, and quite valuable. Someone else might have a more precise number for you.

Ricky 12-27-2018 06:08 PM

THanks, Barry! Any idea on value if a 1.5 or 2? I've not seen any prices for this card below VG...

barrysloate 12-27-2018 06:10 PM

I would guess a mid-four figure price, but I am not really up on these. If it weren't for that speck of paper loss, that's a really nice card.

swarmee 12-27-2018 06:11 PM

I would guess a 2(MK) because of the black ink smudge below the paper loss. Are you sure it's paper loss and not additional paper adhered? Kind of looks raised in the image, not depressed.
If it is adhered paper, I think you get an Authentic grade from PSA. But if it can be soaked off, maybe a 2.5. I don't have a value opinion.

asphaltman 12-27-2018 06:12 PM

A PSA 2 went in REA last year for $16k. My guess would be between $10k-17.5K depending on who's bidding....great card.

x2drich2000 12-27-2018 06:16 PM

I think it would be a 1.5 as well, and a great card for the grade. Value wise, I think you're probably in the $7500-$10k range. As price points, REA sold a PSA 2 in Oct 2017 for $16k and an SGC A with similar presentation and paperloss for $4k in May 2018.

because e107s are so rare i think collectors are much more forgiving on condition. also e107s also typically are found in really low grade shape. despite that paper loss it's a great looking card that i think would do very well. the psa 2 in rea was nice for the grade and sold for 16.8.

barrysloate 12-27-2018 06:20 PM

My value was too low. Sorry about that.

Plank

Awesome card. I think it would look good in an Sgc holder. The black background would make that card pop. Congrats!

Fred 12-27-2018 06:47 PM

It's a fake....! I'll take it off your hands for a hundred bucks because it looks sooooo real... Then when I send it in for grading, I'd expect a "1" on it because of the paper loss on the front. Might get lucky with a "1.5".

Damn, that's actually a pretty nice card. Sadly, if you were going to sell it, you would probably be wise to have it encapsulated by SGC or PSA. Take PSA if you're trying to maximize the cash realized, take SGC if you intend to keep it and like that really nice black border (it would have a great contrast to the card).

calvindog 12-27-2018 06:53 PM

I don't think the E107 is a serious Registry set so SGC would be fine. And it would look way better in their holder. I think it's a 15K card.

Ricky 12-27-2018 07:18 PM

Definitely paper loss and not paper adhered.

ullmandds 12-27-2018 07:42 PM

Real nice card!!! 10-15k in my opine.

Tao_Moko 12-27-2018 08:25 PM

This is one of my bucket list cards. Not many around. If you google this card you'll see what some of the 1's look like. The paper loss hurts, but yours presents much better than most available. I think the $10-15k should be no problem.

I paid $18k cash at the National this year for this. Sorry for the bad pic - it’s comparable to the one at issue, but no paper loss, and in my opinion nicer than the PSA 2 that sold for $16.8k, which has a ckeck-mark in pen on the front pic.

Thanks, everyone- great info!

I would think your Plank clears at least $10k.. Not sure it gets as high as Rotchkiss but I think 10 is a reasonable floor. I purchased mine for $4K but it is materially less presentable than yours!!

I picked up this guy a little while back. If you've seen the mouse who ate off his name let me know.

not the first time I've heard that...in your case looks like u done real good!!!!

Ricky 01-18-2019 07:10 PM

OK, so I have what may be a dumb question. I'm thinking about sending the E107 Plank that I posted in my original post to PSA to be graded. It's been about 10 years since I've sent a card in to be graded, so I kind of forgot the process. I went to PSA's website and saw this in regards to submission prices:

PREMIUM *$1000
Maximum declared value of $24,999
ESTIMATED TURNAROUND: 1 Business Day

WALK-THROUGH *$500
Maximum declared value of $9,999
ESTIMATED TURNAROUND: 1 Business Day
Please mark outside of shipment box with "1 Day Service"

SUPER EXPRESS *$200
Maximum declared value of $4,999 and all T3s must be submitted at this service level or higher.
ESTIMATED TURNAROUND: 2 Business Days

Please mark outside of shipment box with "2 Day Service"
EXPRESS *$75
Maximum declared value of $1,999
ESTIMATED TURNAROUND: 8 Business Days

Please mark outside of shipment box with "8 Day Service"
REGULAR *$20
Maximum declared value of $499
ESTIMATED TURNAROUND: 15 Business Days

Based on the responses here in this string to my original post, it seems as though this card would probably be worth $10,000+. So my dumb question is, does that mean that, if I submitted it for grading, I'd have to pay $500 or more because its maximum declared value is over $9,999?

Also, depending on what the card grades out at, I'm strongly considering selling it. For a card like this, and to maximize what it might sell for, do people here recommend any particular auction houses?

philliesphan 01-19-2019 03:06 AM

Hi Rich-

It's not a guarantee that it sells for over $10k. I think you could put a value of $9k on the card, and get it graded for $500.

There are many threads on these forums about Auction Houses. Each person here has their favourites or preferences. The two that I most frequently do business with (As a consignor, and as a bidder) are Robert Edwards Auctions and Love of the Game Auctions.

In REA, even a great card like this might not get the limelight / prominence that it may get in a smaller auction house like LotG. However, REA might have a slightly broader reach in terms of customer list.

There are some Auction Houses a few of us will routinely avoid. But there are many other good, decent ones, including many that are owned/supported by folks that frequent Net54.

It's a great card. Despite the paper loss, it has really strong eye appeal and contrast. Also, depending on your laziness quotient factor, the Auction House can submit on your behalf (which would be a negotiated part of your consignor contract) if you'd rather just send the AH your card instead of getting it graded and then consigning it

Good point Marc. An auction house should have it graded for you, and you may be able to get that thrown in as part of the consignment, because it is a great card. BTW- I got mine for $18k at the National last year

ullmandds 01-19-2019 06:27 AM

I agree if you def plan to sell have the auction house send to have graded...it will likely come back much much quicker.

philliesphan 01-19-2019 07:17 AM

One more quick point-

While I'm a huge fan of REA as an auction house, their March auction already will have a (pretty nice looking) new to the hobby E107 Plank in it, so you may want to consider where / when / how.

Sweet card

Sweet card

yes...make sure yours is the only one in the auction you choose...which shouldn't be too hard!!!!!!!

Ricky 01-19-2019 08:08 AM

THis is great information - thanks!! I will send to the auction house and have them send it for grading for me. I was leaning toward REA, but now I think they're the one and I'll skip the March auction if there's already another E107 Plank in it.

Question about consignment fees - let's say this card sells for $10,000 or $15,000... what would be the dollar figure that REA would receive, assuming they send in for grading? What percentage do they work on?

JeremyW 01-19-2019 09:23 AM

REA has a 20% buyer's premium. You should be able to get them to waive the seller's premium. In the end, REA will take 20% of the final price (20% buyer's premium included).

Personally, I would need a REALLY good reason to consign a card like that if I had to pay any seller fee. I believe most AH will give you 0% seller fee on a card like that and so their profit is whatever the buyer's premium is that they charge. Assuming a 0% seller's premium, and a 20% buyers premiums with the hammer price being $10k, the buyer would end up paying $12k. You would get $10k and the auction house keeps $2k. Some AH's you may even be able to get them to give you a piece of the buyer's premium as well. The thing to remember is that pretty much everything in the consignment contract is negotiable including who pays for grading. Just make sure you understand the terms and that everything is in writing in whatever contract you sign.

Interesting - great info. Thanks!

An update on this card...
Just heard back that PSA graded it a 2, and it will be available in REA's July auction, so if you're an E107 or Plank collector, it's coming...

insidethewrapper 04-05-2019 12:26 PM

Last REA Auction just completed sold SGC 2.5 Plank E107 for $ 18K.

Here's the one that sold at $18K, looks much better.

Rhotchkiss 04-05-2019 05:23 PM

I thought that REA plank was a total steal, and I would have been all over it if I didn’t have one already. That said, it is a comp and it is a superior example.

Ricky 04-05-2019 07:11 PM

I was very happy with the 2 grade... I thought it would be a 1.5. The 2.5 that just sold is a great card, but any e107 Plank is rare and desirable, so I'm happy, and originally when I posted this back in December, a lot of folks here guessed between a 1 and a 2.

calvindog 04-06-2019 05:39 AM

Wow, only a half grade difference! 0_o

Leon 04-09-2019 03:58 PM

I will take any of the Planks in this thread. Thanks for sharing then, guys. At some point I will get another card of him with this portrait. Probably a D359 or E104.
