Red Grange Spalding

Posted By: Carl Lamendola
I picked this up 10 years ago from an oldtime collector who stopped collecting in the 1970's. Sport Company of America solicited all the big names to get their permission on the card. They sent a few samples. Apparently, some big names like Red Grange and Ty Cobb (See the BMW offering on Ebay) never gave permission. If they signed up they were given 500 samples. This would make this his "rookie" card, I beleive. Notwithstanding the Shotwell sets. I do have a few other Grange's from the same era, but its difficult to pin a date on them. I believe this card was issued in 1925.

Posted By: Carl Lamendola
#1 I actually have a photo copy of a letter by the president of sport company of america
promising a different player (baseball) that they would receive 500 cards if they participated.
Value - who knows - BMW is trying to get $5K for his Cobb....I think Red Grange was more important to football than Ty Cobb to baseball....I would think Grange is the Babe Ruth of football.

#2 I have the Red Grange Exhibit - There are actually two different - but I think the "purest" considers one minute to play a "non-sports" issue - but its a football-related card in my book.

There is a Harry Wills boxing example on my site (item #64):

http://www.imageevent.com/exhibitman/rareboxingcards

Sic Gorgiamus Allos Subjectatos Nunc
