Unpopular opinion, but Jeffries resume is far superior to Johnson’s.
Johnson beat Jeanette, Langford (who wasn’t really a heavyweight even then), a washed up Fitzsimmons in 1907, Burns, and he defended his title against only middling competition and champions at lower weight classes (O’Brien, Ketchell), and a washed up retired Jeffries after he quit and become a 300 pound fatso. His actual record is not very strong. Compare it to Jeffries resume. He lost to Jeanette (who he beat far more often), Choynski and Hart before he was washed up. Johnson has the socially popular narrative and biography suited to its audience today. Jeffries has the ring record. |

Not sure if this counts, but I recently picked up this partial set from Japan. I've always liked Rikidozan so thought it would be fun to hunt down the missing cards. Wish me luck. :P

Not exactly a "pickup", more of a "found tucked away", lol.
Has weird defect on it, looked like a calcium deposit that might brush off. But under magnification it looks like paper is bubbled? As you can see it goes through to both sides. Never saw anything like it before. |
Looks like some kind of chemical deposit. That signature looks good enough to make it worthwhile to have a conservator look at it and see what can be done.

Been awhile since I posted a pickup. Was happy to get this Nelson, I have no expectation of completing an 80 card master, but hoping to build 'as many as I can reasonably get'. The images in T224/T229 are fantastic quality for their small size. This one cost a bit more than I would want it too because it's 4 VG/EX range, but it's hard to being picky on condition with the tougher sets. 3 down, 77 to go.

That Ogdens Jackson is fantastic. I was happy to get one with a small chunk out of the side.

I just want to say that this thread is awesome! Thanks to everyone for sharing your amazing cards. T218, T220, T226, the E cards, etc., they're all beautiful! The best part about stepping into this world for me has been learning about the turn-of-the-century boxers in the T9 set. I knew I was in trouble when I bid on and won a T218 Jeffries about a week after I got my T9s. :D I'm going to be taking a close look at the Jeffries barn the next time I'm at Knotts Berry Farm.

Some of my pickups this week.
More Silvers, because why not? A T225 I needed for my master set run, and 3 more T227's. Klaus is an upgrade, Coulon I had one of, and Wolgast gives me all 3 of his possible back types. The Gans and Donovan's are upgrades. 3 of the cards are something special. The Coburn may or may not be a proof. It's a blank back, missing his name, and has what seems to be a cutting line at the very top of the card. I've never seen another like it, happy to have it as a centerpiece in my T220 silver collection. The McAuliffe next to it might be a proof; it's missing the silver layer, probably handcut (the edges so worn down it's hard to be certain it originally was handcut) and also blank backed. The McAuliffe is just like the cards on the sheets I discovered a couple months ago. Both are unique items. T220-1 Silver is my favorite set of cards, so unique cards from it are about as cool as cool gets in my book. Very happy to add these to my set. The Jack Johnson doesn't look special at first, but it's not much more common than the unique cards here. Until very recently, I had this as a probable no print with the Hassan, Series 2 notation, factory 30 back until another collector showed me his Johnson with this back. factory 30 backs are tougher than 649, but this back is not notably difficult with any of the other 50 subjects on which it is found. I strongly suspect, though cannot quite prove, that the green pose Jack Johnson was mostly printed on it's own sheet separate from the other cards after his late addition to the series 1 checklist and rule-breaking continuance into series 2. SGC 4.5's are usually out of my price range, but when very rare items are encountered one can't be picky about keep to the Fair's. I highly doubt the hobby will ever put much value on non-Tolstoi backed T218's, no matter how truly rare (this combination is tougher than Johnson Blue with a Tolstoi, easily), but for me it is a major pick up because of the back. And by far the most I've paid for a T218. This puts me at 621/632 cards to complete the master set, with the most difficult cards crossed off. 1 tough Mecca cards, 8 Tolstoi's, and 2 commons I just haven't grabbed left to complete. Very happy it's owner was kind enough to let it go to a new home where it will hopefully reside for decades in an eventually completed master set. |

Thanks to Marslife for this pleasant surprise! Russell here has the Hassan Series 2, F30 back. Crossing it off puts me at 622/632 cards for the master. Down to the final 10, 1 of which (Sedley with the Hassan Series 2, F30 back) is easy, and then 9 more pain in the rears

These should look pretty familiar to the board from another thread. Up to a whopping 10 of them for my T219 master set. Without some incredibly good luck, I doubt I will ever finish this one, but it's fun to compile as many of the 200 cards as possible.

This was a nice find by Dave. Looks to be from an original collection. I tried to pick a few that had a card in the Tolstoi group, for back runs. I'm at about 10 or 11 now, and I wasn't going for the set, but will add on more if I can.

Has a crease down the middle, I'd call it Good, but Turkey Red's tends to look great in low grade with those fat borders that eat up the wear and keep it away from the large, gorgeous lithographs. Maybe I'm weird, but I really like the backdrop of Johnson and Langford's cards, in front of a farmhouse rather than the indoor ring the other cards use. Johnson and Langford looks more like a blowup type 1 T220, the rest of the cards blown up T218's.

I don't know squat about Gibbons really, Walcott was of course a fine champion. The Lorillard's Elliott is a type card, and in horrific condition. But I like cards in horrific condition and one can't be picky on these, tough set. |
