1928 Ice Cream Sets

Posted By: Richard
I don't know if this has ever been a topic before, but does anyone know how the various ice cream sets produced their cards and/or found the photographs for their cards? Were all of the 1928 ice cream sets (Sweetman, Tharps, Harrington, Yuengling, W502) derived from the 1927 York pictures? And is there any way to confirm that the 1928 sets were all actually from 1928?

Please find the following pictures attached: Tharps on the left and Yuenglings on the right. It appears that the yuenglings picture was derived from a copy of the tharps, or another set's actual card. You can even see the left edge of the "photocopy" in the yuenglings card. Could it be that some 1928 sets predate others? Or some of the 1928 sets were actually produced in 1927?

I only have the Gehrig card as an example to compare (The Gehrig card may be the only example of the "photocopy" image?). If anyone else has other cards from similar sets that have a similar "copied" effect, please share.

<img

Posted By: Bryan Long
I just bought the Yuenglings Babe Ruth but I have nothing else to compare it to. If someone has the sweetman or tharps it would be interesting to put them side by side and see how they look. Sorry the picture is so big, but for some reason I couldn't make it any smaller.

I took out the photo because I didn't want people to have to scroll back and forth to read the posts. I hate doing that. If you want to see a pic to compare just let me know.

Posted By: Todd Schultz
But I can tell you that many of the photos were re-used from days gone by. The Bill Terry card does not even depict him--it's Zeb Terry from the 1917 Collins-McCarthy/Boston Store/Standard Biscuit sets. An 11 year old or more photo. I have a Sweetman Pie Traynor that I believe was used in a strip card set from several years prior as well. So it seems that the photos for the 1927-28 sets you mention were "borrowed" from multiple sources.

Posted By: Richard
Todd - I understand what you are saying. But it appears that the Yuenglings card was made from a copy of an existing FINISHED CARD, and not just shared the same original photo.

That is why I am curious as to the dating of these sets - whether they were issued concurrently or not.

Posted By: Richard
Scot - for sure you owned at least the card on the left, because I bought it from you! Thanks again, but I will never be able to complete anything unless more people like you are willing to relinquish their holdings

Posted By: Scot
Richard,
I thought that Tharp's looked familiar. Like most set collectors from this era will tell you, You must be patient.
I know a couple of collectors that have 1920's cards I need. They know I'm waiting like a spider. These sets are mostly Hall of Famers and provide a real tough challange to complete.

Posted By: Mark
Interesting - So for those who don't count exhibits, Kashins, etc., I guess Bill Terry's rookie isn't until the 1932/33 US Caramel set since those are the first cards that actually depict him.

Posted By: cmoking
I have a 1928 Tharps Babe Ruth. I have a scan, but I don't currently have the ability to reduce the size of the scan - it is about 1000KB. So I can't post it here. If someone is willing to reduce it for me and post it in this thread, please give me your email address.

cmoking@yahoo.com
