No Respect for Sweet Cap 350-460 OP Fac. 42!

2 Attachment(s)
Does anyone else feel the Sweet Caporal 350-460 Overprint (Fac 42-4th Dist-NC) backs don't get the respect they deserve when it comes to the scarcity rankings?

They sure have a small population according to grading company reports and are pretty tough to find in decent shape on eBay and other online auctions for a "common" back.

By the way, I'm new to the forum and looking forward to meeting everyone and talking everything T206!

Also, does anyone on here have this Kaiser Wilhelm (With Bat) in their collection? I have yet to see another one!

Joshchisox08 03-26-2016 04:33 PM

I've always liked the backs but to most people I think when they see that the company is Sweet Caporal they disregard any factory numbers associated with it.

That said I've always wondered why an "Overprint" is more scarce than others. This is where I admit ignorance. Was it in fact not overprinted, or produced more than others? Just wondering why it would be called or referred to as an Overprint if that were the case.

Sean 03-26-2016 04:40 PM

The "overprint" is that ornate red line that is supposed to cover the Factory 30, but in this case missed. On most overprints the line covers the Factory 30, and all you can see is the Factory 42.

Josh --

It had never occurred to me until reading your post that "overprint" in this context might mean "printed more than other cards"; in fact, I was confused by your post until I saw Sean's response. As Sean says, "overprint" in the description of this back refers to the bar that overprints (or overstrikes) the original factory number.

Thanks Sean. I forgot because, I mostly see them labeled as Overprint and seldom have seen them labeled Overstrike. But I have seen some people say overstriike.

Yeah, sorry I was trying to work it in a way that made sense haha. But I always thought that it was a possibility that it was over printed. Sean has confirmed that that is not the case hence they're scarce. I actually own about 6 or 7 of them.

mrvster 03-26-2016 05:33 PM

Welcome aboard!

and you are very right! some of the more "common" backs are not as "common";)

btw....sweet "missed" strike as josh said....may bring up to $250.00 or more for your card sir;)

ullmandds 03-26-2016 06:26 PM

Theyre not sexy enough for most t206 collectors.

VintageJay 03-26-2016 06:38 PM

I agree, it's definitely not the sexiest card! I just know I rarely see these backs, at least not nearly as much as other Sweet Caporals.

Thanks for replying! :)

Double factory back adds some value....

Welcome to the forum. We don't talk about T206s very often so please pardon the lack of enthusiasm for them. ;)

VintageJay 03-27-2016 10:43 AM

Thanks, Leon! It's turned from a passion to an obsession, but I'm sure most of you can relate! :)

xplainer 03-27-2016 04:59 PM

Well, I can be classified a rookie with the Monster (two years or so), but I have studied it hard. Focused on back variations. I have never seen, or heard of a overprint miss. I guess that means there are 10 SC back variations. Thanks for the education.

another OP miss ... don't imagine its that rare as I don't have many T206s

Luke 03-27-2016 06:35 PM

I've seen them called "double factories" most often. They are cool and tough to find, but not scarce by any means. For the most part collectors don't seem to care about them enough to pay a premium. That $250 number is way too high. Probably more like $40-60.

Probably rarer still is the OP missed altogether, like this example of the same Magee batting card.

Agreed with Luke. No way the card even hits $100 unless it's a HOF card.

mrvster 03-28-2016 05:50 AM

josh...luke

I have seen them reach $200- $250 range before, (mostly auction houses tho)....but not on ebay......ebay gets the $60- $100 range.....I saw one sell in rea in the $370.00 range(i believe last fall or spring?), i believe it was a common, but a psa 6 if i can recall....

i agree, the "double factories" are a little more common, but they still command a premium somewhat.....just depends on the venue and the amount of both factories showing....:)

Isn't the regular non overprint/strike 350-460 Fac. 42 even more scarce??? This is the only one I own and literally just got it! Don't recall seeing too many of these.

the 'stache 03-28-2016 06:36 AM

Welcome to the forum, Jay.

I would expect that several of the forum members have the Wilhelm card, though there will be a variety of backs, of course.

Mine has the same Sweet Cap factory 42 overprint. It's in pretty nice condition.

I have one posted for sale in the BST Auction section right now (shameless plug). It's a nice Danny Murphy (batting). I decided to post it last night after reading this thread.

Thanks for sharing!!!

Oops, meant to quote your Sweet Cap Wilhelm (newbie problems).

Again, thanks for sharing!

I think that makes 11 SC variations Josh. The nine, the "both factories - missed OP" and the Fac 42 only.

Veterans, correct me if I'm wrong, but seems to be 11 different SC backs possible (not all players, but you know what I mean).

And what is it about Factory 42? The Piedmont comes to mind.

Yes you do! Thanks for ruining my chances of winning it. Would you be interested in dong a deal off eBay? :D:D

P.S. - I was making a joke about trying to get someone to do a deal off the site, from where they listed it at. Poor humor, I know.

Best of luck buddy.

deltaarnet 03-31-2016 11:00 AM

Ebay seller had a Wildfire Schulte back view VG-G SC 460 42 OP list for 79.99, but never sold. I emailed him an offer of 50.00 and we settled at 60.00.
