Important info re: eBay completed auction info

Posted By: Bob S
Leon, I hope this is not OT.

While on the chat earlier the topic of completed eBay auction info came up, and I did some research. So here's the scoop. I suppose that most members will be aware of some or all of this, but if even 1 member who is unaware sees this I think it will be well worth it.

eBay now provides only 15 days of completed auction info for free, down from the former 30 days. They do offer additional days of info for various costs, the details of which can be found at the following site:

http://pages.ebay.com/marketplace_research/detailed-comparison.html

Note that the maximum # of days of completed auction info offered is 90, and the cost of that service is $29.99/mo. Please never spend a dime for this because 120 days of the same info is available for FREE at the following site:

http://www.smartcollector.com/

I hope this helps at least a few of our members.

Bob

Posted By: honus3415
Anyone using an ebay sales history service might want to be aware of this fact.

I was doing a history search in ebay on sold items for a particular player. As I was looking through the results, I noticed a very low sale price. When I looked at the listing I noticed the item had been sniped and the true final sale price was more than double the listed results for the item in my ebay search results. I had noticed this on occassion before but being I don't put a great deal of emphasis on past sales results without being able to see the actual item, I let it ride. I have not researched this to any degree to find out how isolated or widespread this problem may be, but this was one instance I could readily check tonight which had ended within the last 15 days.

But based on this fact you might want to be a bit leery of the information you are getting, where you're getting it from and how you use it. If ebay can't get it right, who's to say the information they are passing to others doesn't include these errors and more.

Like the old saying, "If you want it done right, do it yourself."

Digest those numbers and when you finally find that bargain, chances are there's a reason it was a bargain.

Good Luck All

Posted By: Joann
Bob,

You can count me as one collector that didn't know that ebay was down to 15 days on completed auctions. I use that often to look up this or that, and usually don't need anything that precise. But 15 days is a pretty short window, and could very well be fraught (yes, I did just use the word "fraught", lol. Geek.) with misleading info. Thx for the heads up and link.

Joann

Posted By: Charlie O'Neal
honus,

I have had several listing over the past 1 1/2 weeks that has that problem where at first glance it show that the auction ends with my opening bid amount and then if you actually click on the auction it will show the price the card really went for.
