2011 Golf Pick-ups

1 Attachment(s)
Well, maybe we can't have a monthly pick-up thread here as they do on the main board, but how about an annual one?

From the Legacy auction last night, I picked up a lower-end Copes set. I had a chunk of the set already, but couldn't resist picking up this set. I don't have them in hand yet, but the description says most have better appearances than the grades, due to some issues on the backs.

bijoem 01-30-2011 06:52 PM

Great pickup Scott.

I think you got a steal!

scooter729 01-31-2011 05:00 AM

Thanks Joe, it jumped a bunch in extended bidding but I was happy to get it for what I paid!

Golfcollector 02-01-2011 10:16 AM

Nice pick up....still wish I wouldn't have sold my complete set...but I could not pass up the money I sold it for a few years ago. Of course at that time it was the finest set as well, my how things have changed.

You really did not pay much for the set and at that price it = about $40 a card, so how can you go wrong?

I have been slower on the golf stuff lately, picked up a couple of F series ogdens but that is about it. I have been working more on my 1957 Topps Football, 1970 Topps baseball and 191 Fleer football sets.

Too bad upper deck does not decide to make another current golf set. I am itching for something I can go to the store and buy.

Thanks Dave - it actually equated to $20 per card for the Copes set, so even better!

Golfcollector 02-01-2011 05:07 PM

2011 Pickups

I think I overpopped on this, just a random bid in Tommy's honour.

Nice card, great book.

Golfcollector 02-28-2011 07:31 PM

some raw pick ups all sent to psa today!

5 Baines Golf Ball cards and one Baines shield Golf card. - First of these I have ever owned. They look pretty nice for being 114 years old, curious how psa grades these...guess I will find out soon.

A trio of Ogdens....2 F Series and one 1901 Guinea Gold

1947 Rich's Coffee

African Tobacco Joe Louis, Babe Ruth, and Jesse Owens.

will show you scans when I get em back. Hopefully psa is not too backlogged!

T2069bk 03-02-2011 06:57 PM

A Great card with a better story....

I got the following card from a fellow board member based on a WTB post I made:

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/r...Golf/TA001.jpg

The story was what made it. Expecting to pay or even give away my modest golf collection for the card I wanted....the member offered the card as a freebie or I could send anything I wanted- they would trust me. I think that is what floored me.

Then just to compound the issue- the first offering I sent got lost in the mail (and being the compulsive neat freak I am- I already threw out the tracking and insurance slips).

I am happy to say the new cards I sent were delivered this week and I might even be able to meet a fellow board member out on the course this summer! By far this has been the most positive experience I have been a part of in 20 years of collecting cards. Thanks again Joe!!!!!!

scooter729 03-02-2011 07:42 PM

Awesome to hear such a nice positive story, and a great Armour to boot!

Golfcollector 03-25-2011 08:41 PM

Fresh Back from PSA!

My 1947 Rich's Coffee...PSA 8
2 F Series 1902 Ogdends Both PSA 4's
a 1901 Ogdens Tom Morris PSA 5.

I have a PSA 4 1901 Morris that will now be for sale. If interested you can check it out on the set registry as I have a photo of it scanned in.

I will listen to serious offers but I do realize that ebay may be a better avenue as the graded Ogdens seem to get some big attention there, and I cannot remember the last Graded Morris I saw from the 1901 Issue being offered.

and a representative back scan, although these do appear to be some back varieties

Lastly a small group of 1901 and 1902 Ogdens - Including a Old Tom Morris, as well as a cool German Coffee Card (highest graded)

Keep us posted if/when you sell one of your Ogden's Old Toms, and I'm sure Joe and I can fight over it...

Rogers Peet

Those Rogers Peet cards are tough. Nice!

scooter729 04-19-2011 07:01 AM

What's going on with the backs that those got 2's? The fronts look awesome!

bijoem 04-19-2011 07:23 AM

Scott -

the fronts look like '7's to me.

the backs have a little bit of glue stain / residue (not really bothersome at all / at least to me).

I guess they were glued in albums and kept nice for the last 80 years.

scooter729 04-19-2011 07:47 AM

Great pickup regardless of the technical grade!

Did you end up getting the whole set, or just the golf cards? I think I remember the whole set of those (all graded 2's with gorgeous fronts) in a recent auction, but can't recall the details.

famousgolfers 04-19-2011 08:21 AM

Nice pickup Joe. Those Rogers Peet cards are tough! Did you win the whole set? If so, I might be interested in some of the other cards from the set.
Thanks,
Jason

bijoem 04-19-2011 08:34 AM

Jason -

I did not win the set. I know the person who did - and he knew that I collect golf cards and was kind enough to offer them to me.

If you want to PM me the cards you are interested in, I will relay the message to my friend (and then you two can work out whatever you work out directly with each other).

edit: thanks Scott.

famousgolfers 04-19-2011 08:41 AM

Joe,
PM sent.
Thanks,
Jason

Golfcollector 04-19-2011 06:35 PM

I guess it pays to know people...I would have paid a LOT for the Hagen and Jones even in a 2 grade

bijoem 04-19-2011 06:44 PM

Dave -

Just casually observing other sales / auctions - - It seems there have been many more Jones cards offered than Hagen. Actually - I don't remember a Hagen being offered

I know they are all tough.... but is the Hagen even tougher than the Jones (based on your experience)?

famousgolfers 04-19-2011 08:01 PM

Joe,

I have seen 3 of each:
- Hagen's (PSA 2, SGC 84/7, ungraded EX)
- Jones (PSA 2, SGC 80/6, PSA 6)

The SGC population report also shows a Hagen SGC 40/3 and a Jones SGC 50/4, so I guess I sort of know of 4 of each.

I don't know what the PSA population is on the Jones or Hagen. My membership has expired.

Jason

bijoem 04-20-2011 07:20 AM

Thanks Jason.

It appears they are about the same then (as far as how often they show up).

Golf History 04-21-2011 11:04 PM

Rogers Peet

FWIW I have bought and sold three Jones, two Hagens, five Melhorns but only one McCarthy over the past six or so years.

bijoem 04-30-2011 10:27 AM

just arrived from the recent Green Jacket auction.....

(scans and descriptions fron the auction house)

Item 1 - (one of my all-time favorite players)....

Gary Player Signed Masters Caddie Coveralls Nameplate
Presented here is a great item commemorating Gary Player and The Masters Tournament.
This is an exact replica "PLAYER" nameplate from the white coveralls famously worn by caddies at the Masters.
Gary Player has beautifully signed the nameplate.

Actual New York Street Light Banner
Advertising 2004 U.S. Open
This original light pole banner hung on a New York street light near Shinnecock
in the weeks leading up to the 2004 U.S. Open. It measures approximately

famousgolfers 05-01-2011 01:01 PM

Joe,
Nice pickups. I especially like the picture. Are you going to have it framed? That would look great in a nice matte.
Jason

bijoem 05-01-2011 04:12 PM

Thanks Jason.

I recently picked up a big (14" x 17") art/photo portfolio binder.

Its like one big photo album.

Instead of framing, I am putting that photo and the others I have in that 'album'. It is fun to turn the pages and enjoy the photos that way.

The Ball card in my Copes set was a bit rough, so I was happy to pick up this one to upgrade...

bijoem 05-04-2011 05:25 PM

great pickup Scott!

very nice card.

definitely my favorite golf set.

T2069bk 05-12-2011 11:18 AM

Nice Cope's

I hope to upgrade to one soon enough!

I added a few more to my HOF collection, including my first ever Old Tom:

Golfcollector 05-12-2011 07:38 PM

I have a psa set registry for the world golf hall of fame over on the PSA site, take a look...it is ever increasing and ever growing...Sadly they will not grade the Mueller cards...boo.

Golf History 05-12-2011 09:00 PM

Great cards Tim. I always loved that close up photo of Old Tom.

@Dave It is strange to me that they do not grade the Muellers. I always liked the Muellers and it would be great if they could have been updated and remained current. The costs involved, especially with a high profile artist like Bart Forbes, are pretty high. If I remember correctly that set originally retailed in the $150-200 range.

T2069bk 05-13-2011 12:29 PM

Amazing collection Dave

That is truly a great grouping of cards. Thanks for the suggestion to look it was fantastic to see and get ideas of the direction I would like to head.

Golfcollector 05-13-2011 10:25 PM

Tim, thanks for the kind words, I have a couple of new ones I need to update with PSA, of course this set gets added to all the time, so trying to find the right cards to put in the set is sometimes challenging as well.

Jason, thanks for the TT GRay it arrived today!

I have 111 cards at PSA right now, a ton of ogdens golfers and boxers, a complete set of 1911 Wills Boxing, and a few other odds and ends. I also have some items that I have bought recently both graded and ungraded that should be arriving any time, so I will add some scans as soon as I have them in hand.

Thanks Jason - I already had the Jones card in a PSA 7, but figured the price was super low when I saw it, so I had put in what I thought was a low bid. I was really surprised to get it for barely $100!
